{"id":48320,"date":"2020-08-17T21:27:00","date_gmt":"2020-08-17T18:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/japanese-ship-involved-in-mauritius-oil-spill-breaks-apart\/"},"modified":"2020-08-17T21:27:00","modified_gmt":"2020-08-17T18:27:00","slug":"japanese-ship-involved-in-mauritius-oil-spill-breaks-apart","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/japanese-ship-involved-in-mauritius-oil-spill-breaks-apart\/","title":{"rendered":"#Japanese ship involved in Mauritius oil spill breaks apart"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Japanese ship involved in Mauritius oil spill breaks apart<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"article-wrapper\" role=\"main\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"author-byline\">\n                By Travis Fedschun, Fox <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>        August 17, 2020 <span>|<\/span> 2:27pm           <\/p>\n<div id=\"featured-image-wrapper\">\n                        Enlarge Image<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An aerial view taken in Mauritius on August 17, 2020, shows the MV Wakashio bulk carrier near Blue Bay Marine Park.\" id=\"standard-article-image\"  src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/tanker-split-japan-02.jpg?quality=90&#038;strip=all&#038;w=618&#038;h=410&#038;crop=1\" ><\/img><br \/>\n                <span>An aerial view taken in Mauritius on August 17, 2020, shows the MV Wakashio bulk carrier near Blue Bay Marine Park.<\/span><br \/>\n                            <span>Getty Images<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n                        A stricken Japanese oil tanker that\u2019s leaked tons of oil into the Indian Ocean off the island nation of Mauritius split apart Saturday, spreading remaining fuel into the area.<\/p>\n<p>The Mauritius National Crisis Committee shared photos on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> of the MV Wakashio, saying the boat \u201csplit in two pieces\u201d with tug boats \u201calready at work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBooms had been placed already around the ship and the skimmer boat is also present as precautionary measures,\u201d the group said.<\/p>\n<p>The Wakashio struck a reef on July 25 and its hull began to crack after days of pounding waves before finally splitting this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>After becoming stranded in the water, some 1,000 tons of fuel began to leak on Aug. 6.<\/p>\n<p>Officials said a plan to tow the ship to shore has been \u201cimplemented\u201d and the clean-up operation is ongoing, Sky News reported.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16148107\"><img alt=\"The MV Wakashio.\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"662\"><\/img><figcaption><span>AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Oil barriers were in place and a skimmer ship was nearby by the time the vessel broke apart.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the remaining 3,000 tons of fuel had been pumped off the ship in the past week as environmental groups warned that the damage to coral reefs and once-pristine coastal areas could be irreversible.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the committee said: \u201cDiscussions were held during the morning of August 15, 2020, with foreign experts with regards to the action plan for the cleaning of affected sites and to the subsequent rehabilitation of the marine and coastal ecosystem of the region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ship\u2019s leak last month prompted a state of environmental emergency to be declared, with the Mauritian government now under pressure to explain why immediate action wasn\u2019t taken to empty the ship of its fuel.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth has blamed bad weather for the slow response.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16148109\"><img alt=\"The MV Wakashio.\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"662\"><\/img><figcaption><span>Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Mauritian government is seeking compensation from the owner, Nagashiki Shipping.<\/p>\n<p>The company has said that \u201cresidual\u201d amounts of fuel remained on the ship after pumping.
