\n It\u2019s already \u2018Parks & Wreck\u2019 and it may get a whole lot worse!<\/p>\n

Mayor Bill de Blasio said Monday the budget-battered Parks Department is in line for additional cuts even as the existing pare-downs have left many city green spaces covered in trash.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s going to be a struggle to keep them as clean as we want them to be, if we have to go through with more layoffs,\u201d Hizzoner told reporters during his daily press briefing.<\/p>\n

De Blasio has threatened to lay off up to 22,000 city employees in October unless municipal unions agree to $1 billion in labor savings as the city\u2019s already bloated. budget ran into a months-long coronavirus shutdown that has left the city facing a $9 billion deficit.<\/p>\n

For months, de Blasio has campaigned for federal relief or emergency borrowing authority from lawmakers in Albany as ways to avoid budget pain, but there\u2019s been little sympathy from either the feds or Democratic state legislative leaders who called the borrowing request irresponsible.<\/p>\n

That does not app<\/a>ear to have swayed the mayor\u2019s thinking on how to dig out from under the financial burden the city faces.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve all I think come to the realization not going to be federal stimulus right now which is really sad to say,\u201d de Blasio said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to focus on getting long term borrowing from Albany so we can avert the kinds of layoffs that would make the situation you talk about even worse.\u201d<\/p>\n

Budget writers have already slashed $84 million from the Parks Department budget for 2021, which axed the agency\u2019s usual plans to hire 1,700 seasonal workers to help keep city parks and recreation facilities clean during the high-use summer months.<\/p>\n

The Post highlighted the dramatic toll of the cuts have already taken on Monday with a front-page story under the headline \u2018PARKS & WRECK.\u2019<\/p>\n

The Parks Department was one of the agencies that bore the brunt of the cuts in Gotham\u2019s recently passed $88.2 billion budget.<\/p>\n

City Hall also hit other trash programs with the budget ax \u2014 cleaving more than $21 million for litter basket pickup from the Sanitation Department\u2019s budget.<\/p>\n

Last year, there were 736 runs on litter baskets routes across the city every week on average. In this budget, that\u2019s been slashed to 272.<\/p>\n

Frustrated New Yorkers have been complaining for weeks about the cutbacks, which has left trash piling up in cans street corners across the Big Apple.<\/p>\n

Late last month, The Post tallied 16 trash cans overflowing on Brooklyn\u2019s Vanderbilt Avenue from Dean Street to Sterling Place \u2014 leaving blocks-long stretch of filth.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just piles of garbage and all these trash cans. They need to come more often and empty them. I think there is one [garbage can overflowing] on almost every corner. It\u2019s disgusting,\u201d a local, Sally DeLuca, said.<\/p>\n
