Whether through memes or references to terms like \u201cSuper Saiyan,\u201d \u201cKamehameha\u201d and \u201cIt\u2019s over 9,000,\u201d the 38-year-old franchise has achieved global popularity even as it\u2019s remained something of a niche outside its native Japan. With 42 <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/anime-manga\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"6\" title=\"Anime || Manga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">manga<\/a> volumes, several animated <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> (including \u201cDragon Ball Z\u201d), <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">theme<\/a>-park attractions, video <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>s, an ill-fated live-action adaptation and billions of dollars in merchandising revenue, the series isn\u2019t going anywhere soon. For all that, feature-length animated films have been rare \u2014 the new \u201cDragon Ball Super: Super Hero\u201d is only the fifth, whereas there have been 15 running an hour or less that were usually shown as double features.<\/p>\n<p>And though \u201cSuper Hero\u201d opening in more than 2,500 U.S. theaters makes it one of the franchise\u2019s more ambitious incursions into the American market, the film is decidedly a fans-only proposition whose lore-related nuances will be lost on first-timers. That isn\u2019t a criticism so much as a warning: This should not be your entree into the world of \u201cDragon Ball.\u201d The likes of Goku, Piccolo and Vegeta are all back, and though they\u2019re compelling characters, much of what they do here has weight because of their individual and shared histories. Even \u201cDragon Ball Z\u201d veterans could be at sea here, as the story follows that of the \u201cDragon Ball Super\u201d manga, 131-episode animated series and 2018\u2019s \u201cDragon Ball Super: Broly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If that sounds like a lot of context for what at its core is a traditional good-versus-evil story, that\u2019s because there\u2019s a lot swirling around that core. \u201cSuper Hero\u201d follows the nefarious Magenta (who\u2019s short in stature but big in ambition) as he revives the Red Ribbon Army, using two androids named Gamma 1 and Gamma 2 to present themselves to the world as superheroes while actually carrying out Magenta\u2019s less-than-benevolent aims. He does so with the help of a boy genius named Dr. Hedo, whose devotion to building the most advanced artificial human the world has ever seen is exceeded only by his love of Oreos.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the ensemble includes returning heroes like Goku, Gohan and Piccolo, who are eventually called to action against Magenta and his would-be Army after sorting out their own ongoing issues. Several of them can fly, and all have at least a touch of grandiloquence to them. \u201cDragon Ball Z\u201d has always existed on a large scale, with plans for world domination existing alongside an often childlike sense of humor. In keeping with that, \u201cSuper Hero\u201d is often super serious until it\u2019s not \u2014 a tonal back-and-forth that elicits whiplash nearly as often as it elicits laughter.<\/p>\n<p>The animation itself is quite striking at times, with vibrant background colors \u2014 especially the blue grass and purple trees of Beerus\u2019 planet, the film\u2019s most compelling location \u2014 and detailed shading emphasizing every character\u2019s facial expressions. Those expressions, it will come as little surprise to learn, are often quite dramatic. \u201cDragon Ball\u201d isn\u2019t known for the subtlety of its characterizations, which is part of the appeal. Big personalities take part in even bigger battles, especially during the film\u2019s climax.<\/p>\n<p>The actual dragon balls, if you\u2019re wondering, are mystical spheres with no individual power that can summon a wish-granting dragon when all seven are gathered \u2014 and, as you might imagine, not everyone with the wherewithal to seek them out has pure intentions. (It\u2019s not always life and death, however, as when one character here uses two of her wishes on a firmer bottom and ever so slightly longer eyelashes.)<\/p>\n<p>Whether you prefer subs or dubs \u2014 one of anime\u2019s longest-running, most foundational debates \u2014 \u201cSuper Hero\u201d won\u2019t disappoint, as it\u2019s being made available in both formats. (This writer prefers the subtitled version, for what it\u2019s worth.) Longtime devotees are unlikely to be disappointed regardless, as the film, while nothing groundbreaking, mostly finds a sweet spot between fan service and narrative heft.
