Imagine you\u2019re driving along during peak hour. You get an alert of incoming traffic and shapeshift into an aircraft that takes to the skies, overtaking commuter delays, toll bridges, and construction delays \u2014 suck it, gridlock! But the reality of the flying car (aka air car) is a lot less spontaneous and a lot less flexible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I\u2019m here to burst your bubble following the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.samsonsky.com\/\">Samson Sky\u2019s<\/a> successful FAA inspection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week, after 14 years of design, R&amp;D, and fundraising, Samson Sky, creators of the Switchblade flying car, announced that after an inspection by an FAA agent, the vehicle successfully completed high-speed taxi testing and is ready to take flight.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper shift channel-cta hs-embed-tnw\">\n<div id=\"hs-embed-tnw\" class=\"channel-cta-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"channel-cta-img\"><img class=\"js-lazy\" https:=\"\"\/><\/div>\n<p><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/src=\" https:=\"\"\/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<div class=\"channel-cta-input\">\n<h2 class=\"channel-cta-title\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hi_there_EV_nerd\"><\/span>Hi there, EV nerd!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"channel-cta-tagline\">Subscribe now for a weekly recap of our favorite mobility stories<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specifically, the company repeated high-speed acceleration runs down the runway up to take-off speed. Technically the Samson Sky Switchblade is classified in the US as a three-wheeled motorcycle \u2013 but it also flies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With room for a pilot plus one passenger, it can both drive on roads and use runways to take off and land, using wings that fold out from storage underneath its body.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_shapeshifting_dream_is_not_as_sexy_as_it_sounds\"><\/span><strong>The shapeshifting dream is not as sexy as it sounds<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll see one of the sticking points if you read that last paragraph carefully.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Legally you are as dependent on (certified) airfields with runways as any regular airplane.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means your take-off and landing location flexibility is identical to existing planes. In other words, the company\u2019s claim that \u201cyou can fly where you want\u201d is dependent on the existence of airfields that will allow you to fly there.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"So_where_can_a_flying_car_lift_off\"><\/span><strong>So, where can a flying car lift off?\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I spoke to Corvin Huber, CEO and CTO of <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/skyroads.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skyroads<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to get some insider knowledge on the logistics. Skyroads is developing an automated airspace management and vehicle guidance system that will enable autonomous passenger and cargo vehicles to take off, fly, and land.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, there are no facilities developed for use by private flying cars in the US. There are, of course, private airs<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>s, but these would need regulatory <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roval to host flying cars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Huber notes that even access to traditional airports is not cheap.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, we still don\u2019t know exactly how flying car owners will book their launch slot. Not sounding so spontaneous now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, there\u2019s also the challenge of getting your Switchblade.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wait_you_have_to_build_your_own_air_car\"><\/span><strong>Wait, you have to build your own air car?\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Switchblade will be registered as an Experimental Homebuilt aircraft in the air. On the ground, it will be registered as a custom motorcycle or kit car, depending on where you live.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And you have to build it yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the company, the build time for the Switchblade Kit is approximately 2,000 hours for at-home builders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or you can use the Samson Builder Assist Center, where the company claims it could take one week full-time \u201cwith our pro build team assisting you at each build station on the line. All that would remain would be the paint job or vinyl wrap.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m not questioning the skills of the Samson building team, but I\u2019m not convinced when it comes to the customer. Huber explained that they also need a medical by a flight examiner and to obtain a repair license to maintain their aircraft.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, just this week, Samson shared that while its original pre-flight owners were pilots, \u201cwith quite a few being commercial pilots, retired military pilots, and aerospace engineers,\u201d today almost 20% of downpayers are non-pilots.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting a pilot\u2019s license is not easy, and what happens if you crash on the road or in the sky?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_the_heck_do_you_insure_a_flying_car\"><\/span><strong>How the heck do you insure a flying car?\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Car insurance is already laborious if you need to make a significant claim. This means that once available commercially, you can only fly it in Slovakia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samson plans to manufacture a certified Switchblade in the future, claiming that the current design is almost compliant. However, this will drastically increase the price.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Its_not_green\"><\/span><strong>It\u2019s not green<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My biggest gripe with the Switchblade flying car is that it uses gasoline as a primary energy source. Considering that the urban air mobility movement aims to get people out of their cars and into more sustainable modes of transport, this is a big fat fail. Air mobility is supposed to advance sustainable transport, not add clutter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, Samson is working extremely hard to provide the necessary infrastructure to make the dream a reality.
