Tim Beiko, who organizes Ethereum core developer calls, in July projected the \u201cMerge\u201d to be launched in the week of September 19.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As the date comes nearer, ether has been gaining market share, while the market share of bitcoin and stablecoins have been declining, according to a Tuesday note by Arcane Research.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in late July, the open interests of ether options, which measures the outstanding contracts, surpassed that of bitcoin for the first time in history. The open interests of ether options recently stand near its all-time high, while those of bitcoin options are still about 35% lower from its peak, according to data from Glassnode.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Eli\u00e9zer Ndinga, director of research at 21 Shares, said he expects more volatility in ether price with the \u201cMerge\u201d approaching. \u201cIt could be on the upside or the downside,\u201d Ndinga said. \u201cIt would depend, again, on how successful the merger would happen,\u201d according to Ndinga.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the options market, some people have expiry dates around the end of September, which is obviously indicative of speculation,\u201d Ndinga noted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some traders appear to be positioning themselves with the expectation for ether price to rise into the merge and fall afterwards, according to analysts at Glassnode.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth futures and options markets are in backwardation after September, suggesting traders are expecting the Merge to be a \u2018buy the rumor, sell the news\u2019 style event, and have positioned accordingly,\u201d the analysts wrote in a note Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ether\u2019s three-month futures contracts have been trading lower than its spot price. \u201cThis means that futures traders are pricing ETH at a discount post Merge,\u201d according to the Glassnode analysts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The backwardation may also be a result from some trader\u2019s strategy of going long ether in the spot market while shorting ether futures, in preparation for the possibility of a hard fork, analysts at Arcane Research noted.<\/p>\n<p>In late July, Ethereum miner Chandler Guo <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChandlerGuo\/status\/1552382597086470146?s=20&amp;t=qCxZL2arCj9xQYIz6LG4Qw\" class=\"icon none\">proposed <\/a>to hard fork the Ethereum blockchain, splitting the chain, with one that continues to be based on the proof-of-work consensus mechanism. The Galaxy Digital CEO has ideas about navigating the crypto winter.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Coinbase_under_SEC_scrutiny\"><\/span>Coinbase under SEC scrutiny<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Coinbase Global Inc.<br \/>\n        COIN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/225893452\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-10.77%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n      \u00a0said it has received investigative subpoenas and requests from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, pointing to potential further<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>pressure facing the crypto exchange, after it posted wider-than-expected losses in the second quarter.<\/p>\n<p>The crypto exchange said Tuesday it has received investigative subpoenas and requests from the SEC \u201cabout certain customer programs, operations, and existing and intended future products\u201d, including its processes for listing assets, the classification of certain listed assets, its staking programs, and its stablecoin and yield-generating products, according to\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/ix?doc=\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/1679788\/000167978822000085\/coin-20220630.htm\" class=\"icon none\">a quarterly filing<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Coinbase has been reportedly\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-07-26\/coinbase-faces-sec-investigation-over-cryptocurrency-listings?sref=OQBow3f2\" class=\"icon none\">facing a U.S. probe<\/a>\u00a0into whether it improperly let Americans trade crypto that should have been registered as securities, according to a Bloomberg report in July.<\/p>\n<p>In a shareholder letter also published Tuesday, Coinbase said the SEC in May sent the company a voluntary request for information, including its listings and listing process,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>but that the exchange doesn\u2019t yet know if this inquiry will become a formal investigation. \u201cWe regularly get formal and informal questions from regulators about our views on the development of the cryptoeconomy, our products, and our operations,\u201d the company wrote in the shareholder letter.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Treasury_Department_sanctions_Tornado_Cash\"><\/span><strong>Treasury Department sanctions Tornado Cash <\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>The U.S. Treasury Department\u2019s Office of Foreign Assets Control on Monday sanctioned Tornado Cash, which allows users to conduct private crypto transactions. <\/p>\n<p>As a result, Tornado Cash\u2019s property and interests in property in the U.S. will be blocked, according to a statement by the Treasury Department Monday. <\/p>\n<p>The platform has been used to launder more than $7 billion worth of cryptocurrencies since its creation in 2019, including $455 million stolen by the Lazarus Group, a North Korean state-sponsored hacking group, according to the statement. <\/p>\n<p>Tornado Cash was also allegedly used to launder more than $96 million in the hack on Harmony blockchain\u2019s Horizon bridge in June and over $7.8 million from the exploit against Nomad bridge earlier this month, the Treasury department said.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Crypto_companies_funds\"><\/span>Crypto companies, funds <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Shares of <strong>Coinbase Global Inc<\/strong>. tanked 10.9% to $83.90 on Thursday, and they were down 5.6% over the past five trading sessions. Michael Saylor\u2019s <strong>MicroStrategy<\/strong> <strong>Inc.<\/strong><br \/>\n        MSTR,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202561856\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.35%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       went down 0.5% Thursday to $334.08, while the shares went up 7.8% over the past five days.<\/p>\n<p>Mining company<strong> Riot Blockchain Inc<\/strong>.<br \/>\n        RIOT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/209538617\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+4.50%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       shares gained 3.7% to $9.44 Thursday, and rallied 15.6% over the past five days.
