But what started as a pause is becoming more and more permanent. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/quicktakes\/2021\/10\/07\/more-75-colleges-don%E2%80%99t-require-sat-or-act\">75 percent<\/a> of colleges aren\u2019t requiring the SAT or ACT. Even <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2022\/1\/27\/barone-wealth-admissions\/\">Harvard<\/a> officially called testing off until at least the class of 2030\u2019s admission cycle.<\/p>\n<p>The pandemic coincided with growing hostility towards standardized testing, underpinning concerns about demographic performance <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/reports.collegeboard.org\/pdf\/2019-california-sat-suite-assessments-annual-report.pdf\">disparities<\/a> in the quest for equity in admissions.<\/p>\n<p>To be sure, the SAT and ACT are not perfect \u2014 a poor night\u2019s sleep, a dead calculator, or a pencil-t<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>er at the next desk could all throw a test-taker off their <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> \u2014 but it represents a quantifiable measure of aptitude to be holistically weighed with more subjective measures, like essays, interviews and letters of recommendation.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/students-tests.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"A backlash against standardized testing has seen hundreds of colleges do away with SAT and ACT requirements. This policy will <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2021\/12\/24\/who-stands-gain-most-harvards-sat-optional-policy-harvard-admissions-officials\/\">remain in place at least until 2026<\/a>.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Shutterstock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/0956797612438732\">Studies<\/a> have consistently demonstrated that standardized testing is a good predictor of success on campus <em>and<\/em> over a lifetime, even after taking into account test-takers\u2019 socioeconomic backgrounds. And because they\u2019re also strongly <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aft.org\/sites\/default\/files\/periodicals\/Nisbett.pdf\">correlated<\/a> with IQ, test scores are the type of indicator admissions officers should be salivating over.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Removing this objectivity from the admissions process will spell disaster.<\/p>\n<p>Without the SAT or ACT, GPAs are the only solid number colleges have to work with, but this measure is becoming increasingly meaningless. A <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.act.org\/content\/dam\/act\/secured\/documents\/pdfs\/Grade-Inflation-Continues-to-Grow-in-the-Past-Decade-Final-Accessible.pdf\">study<\/a> of more than 4 million seniors\u2019 credentials found GPAs have been steadily on the rise for years. Sanchez, co-author of the study, told me. \u201cWhen you eliminate testing, you\u2019re taking away an objective measure, and you\u2019re introducing more subjectivity into the college admissions process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a world without testing, what\u2019s to stop elite high schools from inflating students\u2019 GPAs to compete for good college placement <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/25-best-private-high-schools-for-getting-into-top-colleges-2016-3\">results<\/a>? Furthermore, SAT and ACT results also helped identify students from disadvantaged backgrounds with challenging circumstances who have the potential to shine on campus.<\/p>\n<p>In March, an MIT advisory panel unanimously opted to reinstate standardized testing in their admissions process, declaring, \u201cWe believe a requirement is more equitable and transparent than a test-optional policy.\u201d Now, more schools must follow suit in restoring objectivity to the admissions process.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/black-man-exam.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"A key critique of standardized tests is that they penalize lower-income and minority students who lack the resources to adequately prepare for the exams. The demise of standardized testing actually has profound implications in the professional world. Now that movements are afoot to make the LSAT and the MCAT optional for law school and medical school admissions (and even <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.bloomberglaw.com\/business-and-practice\/law-school-admission-test-would-be-optional-under-aba-proposal\">supported<\/a> by the American Bar Association), it begs an important question:<\/p>\n<p>Do you want the lawyer defending you in court or the doctor performing your surgery to be where they are because they succeed in a high-pressure testing setting, or because someone wrote them a really nice letter of recommendation?\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
