If you want more space on your virtual machine\u2019s hard disk later, you\u2019ll have to enlarge the virtual hard disk and partition.<\/p>\n<p>Note that you may want to back up your virtual hard disk file before performing these operations \u2014 there\u2019s always a chance something can go wrong, so it\u2019s always good to have backups. However, the process worked fine for us.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Update_Use_the_Virtual_Media_Manager_in_VirtualBox\"><\/span>Update: Use the Virtual Media Manager in VirtualBox<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>VirtualBox 6 added a graphical option for enlarging and resizing virtual disks. To access it, click File &gt; Virtual <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media<\/a> Manager in the main VirtualBox window.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-824550\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/click-file-then-click-virtual-media-manager.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"500\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Select a virtual hard disk in the list and use the \u201cSize\u201d slider at the bottom of the window to change its size. Click \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>ly\u201d when you\u2019re done.<\/p>\n<p>You will still have to enlarge the partition on the disk to take advantage of the additional space. The partition remains the same size even while the disk size increases. First, shut down the virtual machine \u2014 ensure its state is set to Powered Off, not Saved.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_note\"><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Before continuing, you should also delete any <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.virtualbox.org\/manual\/ch01.html#snapshots\">snapshots<\/a>\u00a0associated with the virtual machine if you use the snapshots feature in VirtualBox. It will resize the virtual disk to 81920 MB (80 GB).<\/p>\n<pre>VBoxManage modifyhd \"C:\\Users\\Chris\\VirtualBox VMs\\Windows 10\\Windows 7.vdi\" --resize 81920<\/pre>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_note\"><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Use two dashes before <strong>resize<\/strong> in the command above.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Replace the file path in the command above with the location of the VirtualBox disk you want to resize and the number with the size you want to enlarge the image to (in MB).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_note\"><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> In VirtualBox 6.0+, released in 2019, you may need to use the following command instead:<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<pre>VBoxManage modifymedium disk \"C:\\Users\\Equinox\\VirtualBox VMs\\Windows 10\\Windows 10.vdi\" --resize 81920<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-824401\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/resize-the-virtual-disk.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Command Prompt command resizing the virtual drive. \" width=\"650\" height=\"250\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Note that this process doesn\u2019t enlarge the partition on the virtual hard disk, so you won\u2019t have access to the new space yet \u2014 see the Enlarge the Virtual Machine\u2019s Partition section below for more information.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Enlarge_a_Virtual_Disk_in_VMware\"><\/span>Enlarge a Virtual Disk in VMware<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To enlarge a virtual machine\u2019s hard disk in VMware, power off the virtual machine, right-click it, and select Virtual Machine Settings.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-824410\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/right-click-click-settings.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"500\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Select the virtual hard disk device in the list, click the Utilities button, and click Expand to expand the hard disk.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-824411\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/click-hard-disk-select-expand.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"500\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Enter a larger maximum disk size and click the Expand button. However, the operating system\u2019s partition on your virtual hard disk is the same size, so you won\u2019t be able to access any of this space yet.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-824422\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Partition-Size.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"The Disk Management utility will show you the new space that is available on the virtual drive. \" width=\"538\" height=\"372\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll now need to extend the guest operating system\u2019s partition as if you were enlarging a partition on a real hard disk in a physical computer. You can\u2019t enlarge the partition while the guest operating system is running, just as you can\u2019t enlarge your C:\\ partition while Windows is running on your computer.<\/p>\n<p>You can use a GParted live CD to resize your virtual machine\u2019s partition \u2014 simply boot the GParted ISO image in your virtual machine and you\u2019ll be taken to the GParted partition editor in a live Linux environment. GParted will be able to enlarge the partition on the virtual hard disk.<\/p>\n<p>First, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/gparted.sourceforge.net\/download.php\">download the GParted live CD\u2019s ISO file from here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Load the ISO file into your virtual machine by going into the virtual machine\u2019s settings window, selecting your virtual CD drive, and browsing to the ISO file on your computer.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-824433\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/clicky-stuff-1.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"647\" height=\"490\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Boot (or restart) your virtual machine after inserting the ISO image and the virtual machine will boot from the ISO image. GParted\u2019s live CD will ask you several questions while booting \u2014 you can press Enter to skip them for the default options.<\/p>\n<p>Once GParted is booted, take a look at how the virtual drive is partitioned.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-824438\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/gparted.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"GParted will show you how the virtual drive is partitioned. \" width=\"622\" height=\"382\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_warning\"><p><strong>Warning:<\/strong> Not all operating systems will result in drives that are partitioned this way, however there is a good chance you\u2019ll see something similar. Make sure you pay attention to the existing partitions when you\u2019re doing this \u2014 carelessly resizing, reformatting, or deleting a partition can result in an inoperable virtual machine.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The arrangement of the partitions is extremely important. There are three partitions on the drive, plus 30 gigabytes of unallocated space.<\/p>\n<p>The first partition, sda1, is the boot sector or the EFI System Partition. The second partition, sda2, is the \u201cprimary partition.\u201d It is the space allocated to the Windows operating system \u2014 that is the partition we want to expand. It is noted with the red arrow and red box in the picture above.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_tip\"><p><strong>Tip:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a>ly speaking, you can identify your primary partition by the size \u2014 it\u2019ll be close to the total size of the original virtual drive you created.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Make sure to note that there is a third partition, sda3, directly between the partition you want to resize and the unallocated space we created previously. The position of sda3 means that we cannot just expand sda2 into the unallocated space. The third partition is literally in the way, and we\u2019re going to have to move it first.<\/p>\n<p>Right-click on sda3, then click \u201cResize\/Move.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_note\"><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> It might not be sda3 for you.
