The stock market analysis company for which Dennis Shirshikov, 32, worked was experiencing financial problems and jobs were about to be cut.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey planned to eliminate my entire department,\u201d said Shirshikov. He was living on Long Island with his wife, two young kids and a third on the way. \u201cI couldn\u2019t afford to lose my job,\u201d he said. So he set out to save it.<\/p>\n<p>Shirshikov did it by finding a way to save his employer money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked to have support staff removed, reduced overhead and cancelled sub<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>ions I wasn\u2019t using,\u201d he said. Shirshikov also created a report on the total savings relative to the value he was producing in his role as content editor. \u201cMy fiscal discipline and proactive decision making were cited as part of the reason I was not laid off,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Trading Economics, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/united-states\/challenger-job-cuts\">US-based companies have cut 159,021 jobs so far this year<\/a>. The company let go of 4,000 staff, addressing a group of workers on a Zoom call by saying: \u201cIf you\u2019re on this call, you are part of the unlucky group that is being laid off.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Tesla slowed hiring earlier this year and wrote an email to employees saying that about 10% of its employees would soon be fired. Goldman Sachs recently reinstated job reviews to weed out low performers.<\/p>\n<p>In cases such as these, workers, like Shirshikov, may have time to save their jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Here, experts weigh in on how to try to avoid being shown the exit.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Be_indispensable\"><\/span><strong>Be indispensable<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A good place to start is making yourself familiar with the key performance indicators for your job position, and then make sure that you not only meet them but also exceed them, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jobsearchamanda.com\/\">Amanda Augustine<\/a>, a career expert and spokesperson for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/Talent.com\">Talent.com<\/a>, which owns brands like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.topresume.com\/\">TopResume<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.topcv.com\/\">TopCV<\/a>, and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.topinterview.com\/\">TopInterview<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re in sales, for example, you want to surpass your quota and document the proof. If you\u2019re in customer service, resolve the most cases. And if you\u2019re a server, you want to do what it takes to win the best shifts, upsell the most diners, and train the new workers.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Brag_about_your_accomplishments\"><\/span><strong>Brag about your accomplishments<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important to remind your boss and the powers that be about all the value you bring to the company,\u201d said Augustine. \u201cNow\u2019s not the time to be humble. If you\u2019re hitting your goals or exceeding them, or if you\u2019re going the extra mile for your customers and receiving praise, share the good <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> from the rooftops. No one is going to hype up your accomplishments better than you. When he was asked to fire a worker whose performance was suffering, he sat with the young man and created a plan which would enable him to show his value. Baron asked other team members to help, a turnaround occurred, and the layoff was avoided.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Yet, when Baron\u2019s role was about to be eliminated for financial reasons, he found a way to save his job by cutting the jobs of his subordinates. It may seem selfish, he admitted. \u201cBut if it has to be you or me who\u2019s going to be laid off, I\u2019d rather it be you,\u201d he said. The message here \u2014 help your co-workers when you can but remember that it\u2019s up to every man to look out for himself.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Eye_up_other_departments\"><\/span><strong>Eye up other departments<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cGet together with co-workers in adjacent departments that don\u2019t expect to be affected,\u201d said <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/carolynkleiman\">career coach Carolyn Kleinman<\/a>. \u201cThat way you may be able to learn about vacancies in their areas and you may already have some of the skills they are looking for,\u201d she said.<br \/>If not, then taking a course or earning a certificate in areas where you fall short might, at the very least, demonstrate your enthusiasm.<\/p>\n<p>This is important because in most cases \u201ca layoff is about the position, not the person,\u201d said <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/laurieruettimann.com\/\">human resources expert and author Laurie Ruettimann<\/a>. Having the qualifications for a different job may help you stay with the company.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Be_visible\"><\/span><strong>Be visible<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re working in a hybrid environment but doing it remotely, \u201cmake it a point to work from the office more frequently,\u201d said Augustine. \u201cWorking remotely has its perks, but it\u2019s also easy to be forgotten.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the last thing you want to happen.
