As the price of food soars and the cost of many food staples continues to grow, it has contributed to the already-rampant issue of food insecurity on the rise across Canada. Below, we look at the staggering numbers behind a crisis affecting millions:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_million\"><\/span><b>7 million<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>The number of Canadians struggling with food insecurity<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/foodbankscanada.ca\/hungercount\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food Banks Canada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 7 million Canadians reported going hungry at least once between March 2020 and 2022\u2014that\u2019s more than one in five people across the country. The survey also found that 23 per cent of Canadians reported eating less than they needed to because they did not have enough money for groceries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"88_per_cent\"><\/span><b>8.8 per cent<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>The increase in cost of food<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Statistics Canada, the rate of consumer inflation rose to 8.1 per cent in June, with food and grocery costs rising 8.8 per cent\u2014the largest year over year increase since January 1983.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"20_per_cent\"><\/span><b>20 per cent<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Increase in food bank visits during the pandemic<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March 2021, visits to Canadian food banks reached levels not seen since the 2008 recession. According to <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/foodbankscanada.ca\/hungercount\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food Banks Canada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one third of people accessing food banks were children.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"70\"><\/span><b>70<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b><br \/><\/b><em>The percentage of Nunavut residents experiencing food insecurity<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>roximately 70 per cent of Inuit homes in Nunavut are food insecure. The household food insecurity rate is eight times over the national average, with exorbitant grocery prices largely to blame. Cases of water in Iqaluit have been priced as high as $29.99\u2014additionally problematic given the area\u2019s numerous boil water advisories. (Last year, one do-not-consume order <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iqaluit.ca\/news\/do-not-consume-order-lifted\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lasted nearly two months<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after a fuel contamination accident.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"87\"><\/span><b>8.7<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Percentage of food bank users who are seniors<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seniors represent 8.7 per cent of Canadians who regularly visit food banks. <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/foodbankscanada.ca\/hungercount\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Food Banks Canada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, their increase rate significantly outpaces other groups.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_times\"><\/span><b>3 times<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>The likelihood of food insecurity among disabled individuals compared to non-disabled individuals<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/09687599.2021.1949265\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2021 University of Toronto study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that 65 per cent of respondents whose primary income was \u200b\u200bthe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ontario Disability Support Program or Canadian Pension Plan were food insecure. Other studies have shown people with disabilities to be three times more likely to face food insecurity than those without disabilities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"24th\"><\/span><b>24th<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Canada\u2019s global affordability ranking<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2019, Canada\u2019s food affordability was ranked 18th in the world. In 2021, Canada dropped to 24th, according to the Global Food Security Index.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_to_7_per_cent\"><\/span><b>5 to 7 per cent<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>The epected increase for the rest of the year<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.dal.ca\/content\/dam\/dalhousie\/pdf\/sites\/agri-food\/Food%20Price%20Report%20-%20EN%202022.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canada\u2019s Food Price Report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an annual study published by four Canadian universities, predicts that overall food prices will continue to rise, with the cost of dairy expected to increase as much as 8 per cent, fruit as much as 5 per cent, vegetables as much as 7 per cent and restaurant prices as much as 8 per cent.
