class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<div>\n<p>Minneapolis public school teachers of color will have additional job protections this upcoming school year under a new contract that would allow them to keep their jobs in favor of white instructors with more seniority.<\/p>\n<p>The labor agreement\u2019s intent was to protect \u201cunderrepresented populations\u201d and keep the district\u2019s predominantly white staff from becoming more homogenous, a report said Monday.<\/p>\n<p>About 60% of Minneapolis students are non-white compared to 16% of the district\u2019s tenured teachers and 27% of its probationary teachers, according to a June Minneapolis Star Tribune <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/new-minneapolis-teacher-contract-language-disrupts-seniority-to-protect-educators-of-color\/600179265\/?refresh=true\">report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement states that teachers of color \u201cmay be exempted from district-wide layoff[s] outside seniority order,\u201d according to Minnesota outlet <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/alphanews.org\/minneapolis-teachers-union-contract-calls-for-layoffs-of-white-teachers-first\/\">Alpha News<\/a>, which published language from the contract Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStarting with the Spring 2023 Budget Tie-Out Cycle, if excessing [reducing] a teacher who is a member of a population underrepresented among licensed teachers in the site, the District shall excess the next least senior teacher, who is not a member of an underrepresented population,\u201d the agreement reportedly read.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The agreement said that \u201cpast discrimination\u201d had made the district\u2019s teaching staff \u201cunderrepresented\u201d to the community \u201cand resulted in a lack of diversity of teachers,\u201d according to the article.<\/p>\n<p>The teachers union and the school district \u201cmutually agreed\u201d on the deal, a Minneapolis Public Schools spokesperson reportedly said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>A representative of the Upper Midwest Law Center told Alpha <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> the agreement was \u201cunconstitutional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe [collective bargaining agreement] \u2026 openly discriminates against white teachers based only on the color of their skin, and not their seniority or merit,\u201d James Dickey, senior trial counsel at UMLC reportedly said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMinneapolis teachers and taxpayers who oppose government-sponsored racism like this should stand up against it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The contract was one of the first of its kind in the nation, and a \u201d huge move forward for the retention of teachers of color,\u201d union leaders told The Star.<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_6202284095244445931gmail-ijbzuJ\">\u201cIt can be a national model, and schools in other states are looking to emulate what we did,\u201d said Edward Barlow, a member of the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers executive board. <\/p>\n<p>The more than four dozen teachers slated to lose their jobs this fall largely due to enrollment declines would not be impacted by the affirmative
