The central antagonist, a ruthless killer known as Jack Frost, murders Bod\u2019s family with brutal calculation. His father, mother, and sister all fall beneath the cold slice of Jack Frost&#8217;s knife. The many macabre themes present in <em>The Graveyard Book<\/em> prove no exception. While walking through the many gravestones, Silas and Bod\u2019s conversation gives way to a brief discussion on suicide. Silas, the vampire tutor, begins the conversation:<\/p>\n<section class=\"emaki-custom-block emaki-custom-pullquote\">\n<div class=\"emaki-custom pullquote\" id=\"custom_block_1\">&#8220;There are always people who find their lives have become so unsupportable they believe the best thing they could do would be to hasten their transition to another plane of existence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They kill themselves, you mean?&#8221; said Bod. He was about eight years old, wide-eyed and inquisitive, and he was not stupid.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Indeed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Does it work? Are they happier dead?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sometimes. Mostly, no. It&#8217;s like the people who believe they&#8217;ll be happy if they go and live somewhere else, but who learn it doesn&#8217;t work that way. Wherever you go, you take yourself with you. If you see what I mean.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p><em>The Graveyard Book<\/em> often seeks to lay out to bare truth of human suffering &#8212; naming it, discussing it, and in so doing, humanizing the very real struggles people experience every day. Death, quite literally, can be found on almost every page of the book. Many of the supporting characters within the story are the various ghosts that tell Bod of their myriad life experiences.
