Hire scheme escooter operators can already moderate speed levels. For example, most riders start out in beginner mode at a reduced speed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are also variations in terms of location and time of day. In Paris, escooters are c<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ed at 10kmph (6mph) close to tourist areas, while London\u2019s current escooter trial caps their speed at 19.3kmph (12.5mph).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The London trial also features \u2018no-go zones\u2019 where escooters come to a complete stop, and Slow Speed Zones where electric scooters automatically decelerate to a walking speed of 12.8kmph (8mph).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ebike speed limits vary in the US and Europe depending on the classification of the type of bike \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">check out this guide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for more info. It\u2019s worth noting that while not advisable, it\u2019s also possible to <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.electricridelab.com\/override-the-speed-limit-on-e-bikes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remove<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an ebike\u2019s speed limiter.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"So_why_is_it_not_a_thing_in_all_cars\"><\/span><strong>So, why is it not a thing in all cars?!<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s coming. In 2019, the EU passed legislation requiring all new vehicles to have an Intelligent Speed Assistance limiter. This is <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2018\/dec\/13\/car-lobby-opposes-eu-safety-bid-that-would-save-1300-lives-a-year\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">despite resistance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From July 2022, ISAs became mandatory in Europe on all new-model cars, vans, trucks, and buses. From July 2024 onwards, OEMs must equip every new vehicle sold in the EU with an ISA system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This includes incorporating an event data recorder that logs driving data. The data could determine if a driver was manually overriding the speed limiter in the case of an accident.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are no legal moves to make ISA compulsory in US vehicles. However, many automakers have introduced them as part of their broader ADAS offerings.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Already installed In <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.drive4ats.com\/speed-governor-needed\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trucks,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> speed limiters in gas-powered truck engines to help reduce carbon emissions. And, as driving fast burns more fuel, a speed limiter can help lower fuel costs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Active ISAs could potentially also help mitigate the impact of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vehicle ramming<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in built-up urban areas, such as city centers and during parades and markets.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there\u2019s a downside.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Unfortunately_the_EUs_speed_limiters_are_not_all_that_limiting\"><\/span><strong>Unfortunately, the EU\u2019s speed limiters are not all that limiting<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The EU regulators have opted for passive speed limiters. These alert the driver audibly or visually to the speed limit and when they have exceeded it. They do not automatically slow down the car and the driver can manually override the system.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The European Transport Safety Council has <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/etsc.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/Letter_MVWG_Intelligent-Speed-Assistance-DA_24092020.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">repeatedly pointed out<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that drivers find an audible warning irritating with a tendency to switch off the speed limiter. It asserts that \u201chaptic feedback\u201d, which uses increased force feedback on the accelerator control or engine reduction, are the only effective speed limiters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.here.com\/platform\/intelligent-speed-assistance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to HERE Technologies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ISA systems that only use onboard cameras to capture speed limits from signs may not be able to meet the ISA regulation test criteria. Signs can be visually obscured, and many speed limits are not explicitly signposted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So while ISAs are not mainstream in the US, the City of New York\u2019s trial does more to reduce speed than the EU\u2019s passive efforts. Even escooters are subject to more limitations with their active speed limiters than cars in Europe! And that leaves me feeling damn uneasy.\u00a0<\/span>\n                        <\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
