But the recent Pixel 6a launch\u00a0could give Motorola a run for its money. So, how does the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anrdoezrs.net\/links\/100317643\/type\/am\/sid\/126336-xid-{xid}\/https:\/\/www.motorola.com\/us\/smartphones-motorola-edge-gen-3\/p&amp;___trxnet=cj\">2022 Motorola Edge<\/a> stack up against Google\u2019s Pixel 6a?<\/p>\n<p>At launch, this year\u2019s Motorola Edge will cost $500. The phone\u2019s price will increase to an unknown amount shortly after launch, though we expect carriers to split the difference with deals and discounts. For comparison, the Pixel 6a costs $450 and recently went on sale for $400.<\/p>\n<p>I should also note that\u00a0<em>both<\/em> the Motorola Edge and Pixel 6a come with three years of guaranteed OS updates. Each device will end its life running Android 15, which is quite impressive.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Do_the_Specs_Compare\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_0\">How Do the Specs Compare?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-126344\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.reviewgeek.com\/p\/uploads\/2022\/08\/878db57f.png\" alt=\"The Motorola Edge (2022) next to the Pixel 6a.\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Motorola went big with the Edge\u2019s 6.6-inch OLED display. It supports HDR, and more importantly, it has an impressive 144Hz refresh rate. The Pixel 6a\u2019s 6.1-inch OLED panel supports HDR but caps out at a paltry 60Hz.<\/p>\n<p>Under the hood, Motorola\u2019s new Edge smartphone uses a MediaTek Dimensity 1050 chipset. Its processing power is comparable to the four-year-old\u00a0Snapdragon 855. But the Pixel 6a uses Google\u2019s custom Tensor chipset, which is more in line with the latest Snapdragon processors. In this area, Google is the clear winner.<\/p>\n<p>As always, Motorola wins in the battery department.\u00a0And not because the Motorola Edge\u2019s 5,000mAh battery is larger than the Pixel 6a\u2019s 4,410mAh cell\u2014these products probably have a similar battery life, given the Edge\u2019s 144Hz display. We\u2019re more concerned with charging options.<\/p>\n<p>The Pixel 6a can only charge over a wired connection at 15 watts. That\u2019s not very \u201cflagship\u201d of you, Google! Motorola\u2019s new Edge smartphone offers 30-watt wired charging, plus 15-watt wireless and 5-watt reverse wireless charging.<\/p>\n<p>That said, both phones start with 128GB of storage and 6GB of RAM. And they offer identical connectivity options\u2014Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi 6E, sub-6 5G, and mmWave 5G (Verizon editions only).<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_About_the_Cameras\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_1\">What About the Cameras?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-126361\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.reviewgeek.com\/p\/uploads\/2022\/08\/8706fd84.png\" alt=\"Taking photos with the Motorola Edge 2022's cameras.\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anrdoezrs.net\/links\/100317643\/type\/am\/sid\/126336-xid-{xid}\/https:\/\/www.motorola.com\/us\/smartphones-motorola-edge-gen-3\/p&amp;___trxnet=cj\">Motorola Edge<\/a><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Until we test the Motorola Edge, we can\u2019t seriously compare its camera quality with that of the Pixel 6a. Still, we can look at the specs and make some educated guesses based on previous Motorola devices.<\/p>\n<p>On paper, Motorola is the winner. The Edge uses a 50MP main camera, a 13MP ultra-wide lens, and 32MP selfie camera. These cameras use much larger sensors than the Pixel 6a\u2019s 12.2MP main, 12MP ultra-wide, and 8MP selfie cameras.<\/p>\n<p>But hardware specs mean very little when you\u2019re dealing with modern smartphone cameras. Google makes some of the best <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/659806\/what-is-computational-photography\/\">computational photography software<\/a> of any smartphone manufacturer\u2014it doesn\u2019t <em>need<\/em> to use huge camera sensors.<\/p>\n<p>Motorola sells dozens of smartphones with impressive camera specs. But none of these phones match the photo quality of older Google Pixel phones, including the three-year-old Pixel 3a.<\/p>\n<p>Unless Motorola found a genie in a bottle, the Edge almost certainly falls short of Google\u2019s camera quality. You shouldn\u2019t have much trouble choosing between these devices\u2014do you want the big 144Hz display and diverse charging options of the Motorola Edge, or are you a fan of the Pixel 6a\u2019s powerful processor and awesome cameras?<\/p>\n<p>Pricing may also be a deciding factor. At launch, the Motorola Edge costs $500, which is $50 more than the Pixel 6a. Unless you run into a generous carrier deal, the Pixel 6a looks like a better value.<\/p>\n<p>That said, we still haven\u2019t had a chance to review the 2022 Motorola Edge.
