\n The 2020 Democratic National Convention kicked off Monday night with an introduction by a former \u201cDesperate Housewives\u201d star and a pre-recorded rendition of the National Anthem.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe past four years have left us as a nation diminished and divided,\u201d said Eva Longoria, one of four actresses who will emcee the mostly-virtual event, each on their own night.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmerica is better than this,\u201d she declared.<\/p>\n

Up next, was a video montage of a group of activists and politicians, including Joe Biden, reciting the preamble to the Constitution.<\/p>\n

Then, Biden\u2019s grandkids recited the Pledge of Allegiance.<\/p>\n

The DNC continued to lean into this year\u2019s virtual aspect of the convention, with a choir of young singers from all 50 states in alternating red, white and blue shirts singing The Star Spangled Banner in a video complete with special effects.<\/p>\n

While some watchers said the rendition brought tears to their eyes, others mocked the saccharine display.<\/p>\n

\u201cSure, kids across America singing the National Anthem is adorable, but what if they were signing Fight Song instead?,\u201d quipped one pollster.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
