for basic features&#8221;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<div>\n<p>Motorists are increasingly being forced to pay tacked-on fees and even sign up for pricey sub<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>ions to get basic features on their cars \u2014 and auto giants are telling investors this is only the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>BMW\u2019s recent move to charge car owners in several countries $18 per month to turn on the heated seats in their own vehicles sparked a public outcry, with some would-be buyers calling the move a \u201cdealbreaker.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s not just BMW: industry watchers and consumer advocates warn that the nickel-and-diming threatens to become standard as automakers chase a recurring revenue model pioneered by Elon Musk\u2019s Tesla.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a> Motors recently started requiring buyers of Buick, GMC, and Cadillac Escalade\u00a0vehicles to pay $1,500 for the mandatory \u201coption\u201d of buying three years of OnStar service, which includes features like voice control and the ability to unlock vehicles from a mobile app. OnStar had previously been optional since GM introduced it in 1996.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/key-fob.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Toyota key fob\" class=\"wp-image-23538631\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/key-fob.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/key-fob.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/key-fob.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Toyota started charging for its key fob \u2014 a feature that had previously been free.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Bloomberg via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Toyota, meanwhile, started charging $8 a month to remotely start vehicles\u00a0using a key fob \u2014 a feature that had previously been free. Volkswagen, Porsche and Audi lately have explored similar subscriptions. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s just the beginning, industry experts say, as manufacturers look to transform cars from simple goods for sale into bases for recurring revenue that could fill coffers for years or decades. <\/p>\n<p>General Motors has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.gm.com\/newsroom.detail.html\/Pages\/news\/us\/en\/2021\/oct\/1006-investor.html\">told investors<\/a> it aims to generate up to $25 billion in software and services subscription revenue annually by 2030 \u2014 up from an estimated $2 billion in 2021. Stellantis, formerly known as Fiat Chrysler, is shooting for $23 billion by 2030. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost automakers in the last couple of years have started talking about generating huge increases in revenue over the next decade, primarily off the backs of software and other subscription services,\u201d Guidehouse Insights\u2019 e-mobility analyst Sam Abuelsamid told The Post. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/cars-2022-07-1.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"BMW\" class=\"wp-image-23532558\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/cars-2022-07-1.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/cars-2022-07-1.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/cars-2022-07-1.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>BMW fans have raged at the automaker charging for access to already-installed heated seats. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Anadolu Agency via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe approach that these companies are taking so far is certainly not customer friendly,\u201d he added, singling out GM\u2019s mandatory OnStar as effectively a \u201cbogus\u201d and a \u201chidden price hike.\u201d <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>The subscription push was pioneered by Tesla. Elon Musk\u2019s electric automaker charges <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/support\/connectivity\">$9.99 per month<\/a> to access music streaming, satellite maps and other features. It also asks a whopping $200 per month or a $12,000 one-time payment to access its experimental \u201cFull Self-Driving\u201d option.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, Musk announced on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> his company will hike the price of the FSD option by 25%, to $15,000, starting Sept. 5.<\/p>\n<p>Abuelsamid said that other automakers are \u201cfooling themselves\u201d with their plans to juice revenue through subscription plans \u2014 and predicted they will run into consumers\u2019 \u201csubscription fatigue,\u201d a trend recently evidenced by Netflix bleeding about 1.2 million subscribers in the first half of 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Just 25% of American car buyers say they would potentially be willing to pay extra for subscription car features, according to a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coxautoinc.com\/market-insights\/car-buyers-balk-at-paying-monthly-fees-for-features-and-services\/\">Cox Automotive survey<\/a> from April.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>BMW\u2019s moves toward a subscription model, which Abuelsamid called \u201cparticularly aggressive,\u201d have especially angered fans and would-be customers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> reports circulated in July about BMW\u2019s $18-a-month heated seats charge in the United Kingdom, Germany, South Korea and other markets, the luxury automaker was roundly roasted online.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One TikTok video with more than 24,000 likes showed a BMW locking basic features like the speedometer and radio, demanding cash for the renewal of a \u201cpremium membership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another video with more than 160,000 likes showed a BMW careening off a cliff with the caption, \u201cPOV: new BMW owners after they forget to pay their monthly steering subscription.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-tiktok wp-block-embed-tiktok\"\/>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-tiktok wp-block-embed-tiktok\"\/>\n<p>Safety concerns aren\u2019t entirely a joke, according to Consumer Reports\u2019 associate director of safety policy Will Wallace. BMW currently requires car owners in some countries to pay roughly $12 per month to access a safety feature called \u201cHigh Beam Assistant,\u201d which automatically turns off a car\u2019s high beam lights when it senses another car to avoid blinding other drivers at night.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSafety should come standard,\u201d Wallace said of adaptive headlights. \u201cSome automakers might think that those are simply a convenience feature, but there\u2019s a demonstrated safety benefit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both Wallace and Abuelsamid said the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration should require automakers to put adaptive headlights in every car, just like airbags and seatbelts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/cars-2022-08.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Tesla\" class=\"wp-image-23532671\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/cars-2022-08.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/cars-2022-08.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/cars-2022-08.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Elon Musk\u2019s Tesla pioneered charging for subscription software features.  <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">POOL\/AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While luxury auto brands are taking the most flak for subscription features, mass market automakers will increasingly embrace the strategy in the coming years, predicts National Association of Consumer Advocates executive director Ira Rheingold. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will definitely work its way down market,\u201d Rheingold said of subscriptions. \u201cThere\u2019s no way that this is not coming to your basic car.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>He compared the change to how airlines have increasingly hit consumers with fees for services that were previously free, such as carry-on baggage and seat selection. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrip by drip, people become more accepting of it,\u201d Rheingold said. <\/p>\n<p>BMW, Toyota and GM did not respond to requests for comment.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
