Simcha Felder, who represents the communities around Maimonides and was born there, made the stunning comments in an interview with The Post ahead of a town hall meeting planned by the group \u2014 \u201cSave Maimonides\u201d \u2014 set for Monday night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe movement is not kosher. It\u2019s absolutely\u00a0a\u00a0smear campaign,\u201d Felder said.<\/p>\n<p>He accused the organization of being led by \u201chatchet men who\u2019ve run negative campaigns and whose goal is destroy the hospital and besmirch [Maimonides CEO] Ken Gibbs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe they want Ken Gibbs\u2019 job,\u201d added Felder.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/simcha_felder.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"New York  Sen. Gibbs, for instance, saw his compensation skyrocket from $1.8 million to $3.2 million from 2019 to 2020, during the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to not-for-profit financial records filed with the IRS.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, The Post reported about claims from patients about poor care, that were among nearly 1,000 complaints collected by the Save Maimonides campaign, a grassroots effort launched in July to counter what it contends is neglect and mismanagement\u00a0at the hospital.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"756\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/ken_gibbs.jpg?w=756\" alt=\"Ken Gibbs \" class=\"wp-image-23551931\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/ken_gibbs.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1512 1512w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/ken_gibbs.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1134 1134w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/ken_gibbs.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=756 756w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/ken_gibbs.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=378 378w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/ken_gibbs.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 756px) 100vw, 756px\"\/><figcaption>Ken Gibbs\u2019 salary skyrocketed from $1.8 million to $3.2 million from 2019 to 2020, according to not-for-profit financial records filed with the IRS.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Maimonides Health\/Faceboook<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Felder said the need for improvements at Maimonides is beyond dispute. <\/p>\n<p>He was one of five legislators who penned a letter to Gibbs last month, detailing a list of complaints including excessively long wait times pinned on staffing shortages, and fiscal mismanagement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone agrees improvements have to be made. You fix the problem. It doesn\u2019t mean you destroy the hospital,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>Union workers at the hospital also have prodded\u00a0Maimonides officials to bolster patient safety and staffing \u2014 without undermining the stability of the facility.<\/p>\n<p>Save Maimonides, in a statement, suggested that Felder is beholden to the hospital\u2019s trustees and management who have donated to his campaigns. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIt is unfortunate that Senator Felder seems to be under pressure from his donors at the hospital, but we agree with his recent public statements regarding the poor patient treatment, financial mismanagement and indifference of the executives at Maimonides Medical Center,\u201d the statement said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope this sudden change of heart does not mean he is also turning his back on over 2,000 of his constituents who have voiced their shock at the poor quality of care at the failing hospital in recent weeks. We have one goal \u2013 to make Maimonides better for all of its patients,\u201d the group said.<\/p>\n<p>Felder scoffed when hearing the group\u2019s statement, and said he hasn\u2019t had a competitive election in years and hasn\u2019t focused on fundraising. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis just proves my point. This is their M of O [modus operandi]\u2013 they try to smear and destroy people. I\u2019m not afraid. They\u2019re full of it,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Labor leaders representing Maimonides employees also took issue with Save Maimonides, with\u00a0one calling\u00a0the group a \u201cfake AstroTurf\u201d campaign that has misled people into believing they are affiliates of the unions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are deeply unsettled by reports that individuals with no apparent relationship to Maimonides, and who have passed themselves off as affiliated with unions at the institution, are spreading misinformation to staff, patients, and visitors under the guise of \u2018saving Maimonides,&#8217;\u201d said Brian Morse, executive vice President of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201c1199SEIU members have long advocated for improving care, jobs, staffing, and funding for vital safety net hospitals like Maimonides, and it is outrageous that outsiders would be exploiting these very real issues for their own business or political agendas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The head of the New York State Nurse Association also claimed the\u00a0group is exploiting legitimate concerns that workers have about Maimonides. \u201cTheir co-opting of our fights for ratios and safe working conditions is an insult to our union\u2019s mission,\u201d Nancy Hagans, the union\u2019s president and a Maimonides nurse, said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/save_maimonides_hospital_5.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Maimonides  ambulances line up outside the hospital.\" class=\"wp-image-23551952\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/save_maimonides_hospital_5.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/save_maimonides_hospital_5.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/08\/save_maimonides_hospital_5.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Union workers at the hospital also have prodded Maimonides officials to bolster patient safety and staffing.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Paul Martinka<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But Mendy Reiner, co-chairman of Save Maimonides, responding to the criticism said, \u201cWe have nothing but respect for the hardworking employees of Maimonides. We don\u2019t claim to represent them.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe represent the thousands of patients who have suffered at the hand of mismanagement by Maimonides leadership. Our goals are the same as the unions \u2013 fix the hospital and obtain more resources to end the chronic understaffing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The group\u2019s town hall meeting on Monday night is set to take place at a Borough Park catering hall and will include a free \u201cbuffet dinner\u201d and live entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>In its own statement, the hospital said the Save Maimonides group is undermining the facility by scaring Brooklyn residents away from seeking care there.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe campaign\u2019s choice of tactics speaks for itself \u2013 spending an exorbitant amount of money to discourage people from using the hospital, launching highly personalized and misleading attacks, seeking to undermine the unions that represent our workforce, and attempting to conceal the campaign\u2019s funders and organizers is not a constructive way to improve patient care,\u201d a spokesperson said in the statement. <\/p>\n<p>Maimonides is one of the remaining stand-alone community hospitals in New York City. Most others have merged with larger medical networks to survive financially. For example, Lenox Hill hospital on the Upper East Side is now part of Northwell Health, and Lutheran hospital is now part of NYU Langone Health system.<\/p>\n<p>Maimonides is considered a safety net hospital, with many patients covered by Medicaid, the health insurance program for the needy. Medicaid pays less for service than patients with private or commercial insurance. <\/p>\n<p>The hospital leadership said it has met with elected officials and other\u00a0community\u00a0partners and health officials to help address concerns about patient care and staffing issues. <\/p>\n<p>Maimonides insisted that its staff-to-patient ratios are \u201cin line with, or in many cases better than\u201d those of comparable city hospitals and have remained steady the past three years while grappling with the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut like all hospitals, we have had to contend with industry-wide shortages in nursing and other professions.\u00a0 To offset the gap, we have conducted extensive recruitment, hiring, and training; over the past nine months, we have welcomed more than 250 NEW NURSES to our patient care teams and several nurse educators to help guide them as they begin roles in various clinical settings,\u201d the hospital said.<\/p>\n<p>The hospital said its staffers also \u201cactively seek out and utilize patient\u00a0feedback\u201d to make improvements.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
