Some information on Wikipedia lacks a genuine source or citation\u2014as we learned with the Pringle Man hoax, this can have a wide-ranging impact on culture or \u201cfacts.\u201d But Meta, formerly <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a>, hopes to solve Wikipedia\u2019s big problem with AI.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_note\"><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> To be clear, this is an independent project by researchers at Meta AI, a division of the Meta corporation. The Wikimedia group is not involved, and it isn\u2019t using SIDE to automatically update articles.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As detailed in a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tech.fb.com\/artificial-intelligence\/2022\/07\/how-ai-could-help-make-wikipedia-entries-more-accurate\/\">blog post<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/openreview.net\/forum?id=qfTqRtkDbWZ\">research paper<\/a>, the Meta AI team created a dataset of over 134 million web pages to build a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/verifier.sideeditor.com\">citation-checker AI<\/a>\u00a0called SIDE. Using natural language <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>, SIDE can analyze a Wikipedia citation and determine whether it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ropriate. If you scroll to the bottom of this article, you\u2019ll learn that Joe Hipp was the first Native American to compete\u00a0for the WBA World Heavyweight Title\u2014a cool fact that is 100% true. But here\u2019s the problem; whoever wrote this factoid cited a source that has nothing to do with Joe Hipp or the Blackfeet Tribe.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, Wikipedia editors failed to check the veracity of a citation (the problem has since been fixed). But if the editors had SIDE, they could have caught the bad citation early. And they wouldn\u2019t need to look for a new citation, as SIDE would automatically suggest one.<\/p>\n<p>At least, this is the hypothesis put forth by Meta AI researchers. While SIDE is certainly an interesting tool, we still can\u2019t trust AI to understand language, context, or the veracity of anything published online. (To be fair, Meta AI\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/openreview.net\/forum?id=qfTqRtkDbWZ\">research paper<\/a>\u00a0describes SIDE as more of a \u201cdemonstration\u201d than a working tool.)<\/p>\n<p>Wikipedia editors can now <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/verifier.sideeditor.com\">test SIDE<\/a> and assess its usefulness. The project is also <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/facebookresearch\/side\">available on Github<\/a>. For what it\u2019s worth, SIDE looks like a super-powered version of the tools <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia_bots\">that Wikipedia editors already use<\/a> to improve their workflow.
