“#Yankees sweep embarrassing Red Sox as Luke Voit goes off<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n The Yankees take a big step up in class Tuesday evening after the brutal Red Sox were swept out of The Bronx.<\/p>\n

Now the Yankees face the Rays for three game<\/a>s that could help decide the AL East winner.<\/p>\n

Luke Voit\u2019s two homers and one each from Thairo Estrada and Aaron Hicks carried the Yankees to a rain-delayed 6-3 victory over the Red Sox on Monday night at Yankee Stadium where the hosts completed a four-game sweep against their former partners in what used to be the best rivalry in baseball.<\/p>\n

The four homers were a season high for the Yankees, and Voit has seven, which is two behind team-leader Aaron Judge.<\/p>\n

It was the 16-6 Yankees sixth straight victory and the 10th consecutive against the Red Sox, who have lost 15 of the last 16 games versus the Yankees. The Red Sox are 6-17.<\/p>\n

The only stains on the victory were two throwing errors by shortstop Gleyber Torres, and left fielder Miguel Andujar twisting and turning on Alex Verdugo\u2019s sixth-inning fly ball that should have been caught but bounced on the warning track for an RBI ground-rule double.<\/p>\n

Torres has a team-high six errors and was picked off first by catcher Kevin Plawecki to end the seventh. Voit\u2019s scoop of an eighth-inning throw saved Torres from a third error.<\/p>\n

In his first day back from the COVID-19 injured list, Aroldis Chapman recorded the final three outs in a non-save situation and gave up a run, but pushed the speed guns to 100 mph with four pitches and 101 with two.<\/p>\n

Mike Tauchman replaced Andujar in left to start the seventh inning and one could wonder if the Andujar experiment as an outfielder is over.<\/p>\n

On the plus side defensively, right fielder Clint Frazier made a running catch of J.D. Martinez drive on the warning track for the final out of the seventh inning that likely would have scored Rafael Devers from first and cut the Yankees\u2019 lead to 5-3.<\/p>\n

Voit\u2019s first homer in the second frame extended the Yankees\u2019 streak to 18 games at the Stadium in which they have homered. Voit also homered in the fifth and Estrada hit a homer an inning earlier. Hicks homered leading off the seventh.<\/p>\n

The victory pushed the Yankees\u2019 AL East lead to 2 \u00bd games over the idle Rays who open a three-game series<\/a> in The Bronx on Tuesday night with the promise of being more competitive than the Red Sox.<\/p>\n

The game was delayed for 1 hour and 23 minutes in the fourth inning and cost Jordan Montgomery a possible victory. Montgomery worked 3 \u00b2\/\u2083 innings and gave up a run, three hits, struck out four and didn\u2019t issue a walk.<\/p>\n

Luis Avilan took over for Montgomery in the fourth after the rain delay and worked out of a bases-loaded jam by striking out Verdugo.<\/p>\n

Voit opened the fifth against lefty Josh Osich with his second homer of the game and seventh of the season to increase the Yankees\u2019 lead to 5-1.<\/p>\n

After committing a throwing error in the first inning on Kevin Pillar\u2019s leadoff ground ball, Torres repeated the act in the fifth when he threw high to first on Jose Peraza\u2019s grounder to open the frame. It was Torres\u2019 team-leading sixth error in 21 games. Like Montgomery in the first inning Avilan took the sting out of the miscue by feeding Devers a 4-6-3 inning ending double-play ball.<\/p>\n

Shortly after play resumed Estrada sent a 1-1 pitch from Osich over the left-field wall in the home fourth. His first homer of the year hiked the Yankees\u2019 lead to 4-1.<\/p>\n

Four outs away from qualifying for a four-game sweep against the floundering Red Sox the Yankees were interrupted by Mother Nature in the top of the fourth.<\/p>\n

Leading, 3-1, with two outs Montgomery had runners at the corners and Michael Chavis coming to the plate when a hard rain arrived and forced the tarp to be put on the field.<\/p>\n

Play resumed at 9:33 p.m. and Montgomery was replaced by lefty Avilan who walked the right-handed hitting Chavis to load the bases for the left-handed hitting Verdugo. Avilan got ahead of Verdugo 0-2 and struck him out swinging at 1-2 to strand three.<\/p>\n

In 3 \u00b2\/\u2083 innings Montgomery allowed a run, three hits, struck out four and didn\u2019t issue a walk.<\/p>\n

Montgomery had to pitch around Torres\u2019 throwing error on Pillar\u2019s ground ball in the first inning and he did retiring the next 10 hitters. Included in that total was feeding Martinez an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play to end the opening frame.<\/p>\n

Any thoughts of Montgomery taking a no-hit bid past the fourth vanished when Martinez singled sharply to left with two out in the inning. Xander Bogaerts followed with a single to right. That brought potential tying run Chris Vazquez to the plate and his pop to short left-center glanced off a backpedaling Torres to score Martinez and cut the Yankees\u2019 lead to 3-1.<\/p>\n

With runners at the corners the game was stopped due to rain and the tarp covered the field.<\/p>\n

The Yankees came within a foot of hanging a four-run first inning on a very wild Martin Perez.<\/p>\n

With two outs and the bases empty Perez walked Clint Frazier, Torres and Gary Sanchez to load the bases for Miguel Andujar. Perez\u2019 first pitch to Andujar was out of the strike zone and the second drove left fielder Jose Peraza almost to the wall before he gloved the ball for the final out.<\/p>\n

Denied a chance to jump to a lead in the opening frame the Yankees grabbed a three-run lead in the second when Voit hit a two-out, three-run homer off Perez. It was the 18th straight home game the Yankees have hit a home run in.<\/p>\n

Like the lefty did in the first inning Perez retired the first two Yankees. He then hit Tyler Wade and with Aaron Hicks at the plate and a 2-2 count, Wade broke for second and scored easily on Hicks\u2019 opposite-field double to right-center. Voit followed with his sixth home run of the season, hitting 2-2 off-speed pitch over the center field wall for a 3-0 lead.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
