But that\u2019s as anecdotal as data gets. What does, you know, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a><\/em> have to say?<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       I talked to Arnold Barnett, a professor of statistics at the Massachusetts Institute of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Technology<\/a>, who co-wrote a recent paper that modeled the risk of contracting COVID while flying early in the pandemic. He and his student combed through the available data and built a complex mathematical model to determine the risk of getting infected onboard. Yet they ran into limitations, because no organized effort was made by the U.S. or any country to systematically contact trace COVID transmissions onboard aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody is screened. Nobody is asked if they\u2019ve come down with COVID,\u201d he explains. \u201cThere was no attempt made to figure out where people got it. We have so little data.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s right, of all the billions spent combating the virus, supplying at-home testing kits and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdwallet.com\/article\/travel\/airline-bailout-what-did-consumers-get?utm_campaign=ct_prod&amp;utm_content=1223100&amp;utm_medium=wire&amp;utm_source=syndication&amp;utm_term=anne-stanleymarketwatch-com\" class=\"icon none\">bailing out the airlines<\/a>, little to none of it was spent answering the basic question of where and how people actually contracted the disease in the first place. Models like Barnett\u2019s, while helpful, offer only best guesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we had actual data from the United States, then maybe we wouldn\u2019t have needed a model,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>One systematic attempt to contact trace on a flight that landed in Vietnam found that, of the 16 passengers who tested positive, 12 were in business class, where the one symptomatic case was found. In other words, a bunch of high-price ticket holders at the front of the plane got sick from the same person.<\/p>\n<p>Yet this study from Vietnam\u2019s National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology was performed in March 2020. The first COVID wave had passed and would-be <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>ers were wondering:\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdwallet.com\/article\/travel\/change-of-plans-how-the-pandemic-disrupts-holiday-travel?utm_campaign=ct_prod&amp;utm_content=1223100&amp;utm_medium=wire&amp;utm_source=syndication&amp;utm_term=anne-stanleymarketwatch-com\" class=\"icon none\">Is it safe to fly home for the holidays<\/a>?<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, based on a bizarre study commissioned by many federal agencies involving mannequins coughing at one another, suggested that \u201cmost viruses and other germs do not spread easily on flights because of how air circulates and is filtered on airplanes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You may remember that study. It\u2019s that we still don\u2019t know the rate at which people contracted (and died from) COVID after getting on a plane. Were 1% of COVID cases caused by air travel? Or 10%? More?<\/p>\n<p>We have no idea, and that could have major ramifications down the road.<\/p>\n<p>Read: What frequent-flying celebrities \u2014 and the blowback they\u2019ve received \u2014 tell us about surging private-jet popularity<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Flying_into_the_unknown\"><\/span><strong>Flying into the unknown<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Barnett\u2019s model spit out a nice round number, suggesting the odds of contracting COVID on a full two-hour flight were about 1 in 1,000 at the beginning of the pandemic. But he believes the risks have probably increased significantly since then.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOmicron BA.5 is a lot more contagious than the earlier versions,\u201d Barnett says. \u201cAnd now people by and large are not wearing masks on airplanes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, vaccines and treatments have reduced the mortality rate of COVID, so the risks are more manageable. But what if a new variant emerges that \u2014\u00a0knock on wood \u2014 evades vaccines altogether? Or (no, really, knock on wood) causes serious illness in young people or children?
