But even before that we saw an enormous failure on the part of cops on the other side of the country \u2014 a failure that many believe directly led to the circumstances of Gabby\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>As you may recall, back on August 12, 2021, police in Moab, Utah were alerted to a domestic dispute. An eyewitness claimed to have seen a young man striking a young woman. Police stopped Brian and Gabby, and \u2014 as we\u2019ve all seen on the body cam footage \u2014 could see how distraught the poor girl was.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Gabby Petito case: Full Utah bodycam video\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fCGsW41aQEw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>However, they ultimately let the couple go, leaving them to continue their road <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>\u2026 which of course ended with Brian strangling Gabby and leaving her body in the Grand Teton National Park.<\/p>\n<p>An independent investigation has already confirmed what most of us got from the start \u2014 that cops made \u201cseveral unintentional mistakes\u201d during the stop, including failure to take either into custody despite injuries and failure to get an official statement from the witness. Whether they could have prevented the murder? That we may never know for sure. But Gabby\u2019s family intend to convince a jury of just that \u2014 earlier this month they filed a huge $50 million wrongful death suit against the Moab Police Department!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: Gabby\u2019s Family Win Major First Legal Battle Against Laundries<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Petito attorney <strong>Brian C. Stewart<\/strong> said the officers involved \u201cfailed to properly investigate the reported domestic assault, and thus failed to fully appreciate or respond to Gabby\u2019s life-threatening situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019d think at the very least the cops involved would have been fired, right? Maybe demoted? Well, it turns out just the opposite. <em>The Sun<\/em> learned this week that Officer <strong>Eric Pratt<\/strong> actually got a promotion!<\/p>\n<p>Pratt, who can be seen speaking with Gabby and Brian on that video, is now a <em>detective<\/em>, meaning more responsibility, bigger cases, and a much higher pay grade. Not only that, he\u2019s going to be working directly with children as the school resource officer at Helen M. Knight Elementary School.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_931687\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-931687\" style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-931687 lazyload\" width=\"580\" src=\"https:\/\/perezhilton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Moab-Police-Officer-Eric-Pratt.jpg\" alt=\"Moab Police Officer Eric Pratt\" height=\"431\" srcset=\"https:\/\/perezhilton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Moab-Police-Officer-Eric-Pratt.jpg 580w, https:\/\/perezhilton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Moab-Police-Officer-Eric-Pratt-300x223.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-931687\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(c) Moab Police Department\/<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After the investigation put a lot of blame on how the cops handled things, the city\u2019s official statement was firmly in defense of its officers, declaring that they \u201cshowed kindness, respect and empathy in their handling of this incident.\u201d But the opinion of the people of Moab isn\u2019t necessarily represented by that statement.\u00a0<em>The Sun<\/em> asked multiple locals of the 5,000-population town what they thought, and it\u2019s not backin\u2019 the boys in blue.<\/p>\n<p>62-year-old\u00a0<strong>Barbara Lawley<\/strong> told the outlet she thought those officers \u201cshouldn\u2019t be rewarded\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThey need more training if they don\u2019t know the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>For 40-year-old <strong>Sarah McFarland<\/strong> this was an unpleasant surprise. She told the outlet:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThat\u2019s ridiculous if you ask me. I didn\u2019t know, as locals we know very little.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And\u00a0<strong>Danielle Hunt<\/strong> was incensed! She complained:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI did hear that one of the officers got promoted. That\u2019s honestly going in the wrong direction in my opinion. That\u2019s the worst thing that [they] could have done, promote somebody that f**ked up, are you kidding me?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Pratt \u2014 sorry, Detective Pratt \u2014 is named in the wrongful death suit alongside Officer <strong>Daniel Robbins<\/strong>, as well as then-Chief\u00a0<strong>Bret Edge<\/strong>, who has since quit the Moab PD. Despite that ignominious position as a defendant in the case, he\u2019s still on the job.
