Mr. Big (Chris Noth) complains that the woman he\u2019s pursuing does not answer his calls or return his messages.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cShe can reach me, but I can\u2019t get her,\u201d he repeatedly says.<\/p>\n<p>This is the power of one-way communication: One party exercises more control over the timing and nature of their interaction.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       Like dating, job interviews are a delicate dance. As the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>licant and interviewer converse, they size up each other.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read:<\/strong> New York City wants its retirees back\u2014and the feeling is mutual<\/p>\n<p>But more interviewees are facing the same kind of vexation that Mr. Big experienced. In one-way video interviews, candidates record themselves delivering succinct answers to an employer\u2019s pretaped questions.<\/p>\n<p>Job seekers submit their recordings into the void. There\u2019s no one on the other end to respond in real time.<\/p>\n<p>In viewing these auditions, employers can vet applicants more efficiently and pick the ones who get to advance to the next round of the hiring process.<\/p>\n<p>Young job hunters may welcome these platforms. Perhaps they\u2019re accustomed to curating their image on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a>. Or they\u2019re comfortable filming themselves on their devices and seeing their talking head fill the screen.<\/p>\n<p>But for people in their 50s and up, one-way video interviews may be off-putting. At a bare minimum, they expect human communication to consist of back-and-forth exchanges\u2014nods, gestures, shared observations. The quick questions, answers and clarifications\u2014and the discovery of commonalities (\u201cI grew up in Ohio too!\u201d)\u2014create more opportunities to forge bonds.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Read: <\/strong>\u2018I needed something to do\u2019: How working in retirement is being embraced by older adults and companies<\/p>\n<p>Employers have many options when setting up one-way video interviews and many software providers to choose from. They can require applicants to respond almost immediately to a series of questions\u2014giving them as little as 10 seconds to reply to each query.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes you can take a break,\u201d said Benjy Gillman, co-founder and chief executive of myInterview, based in Tel Aviv, Israel. \u201cIt depends on the employer\u2019s discretion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, employers might let interviewees ponder the questions for days, rehearse their responses and submit the best ones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a>ly, employers let you retape motivation-driven questions so that you can prepare a more thoughtful response,\u201d Gillman said. \u201cThey may not let you retape knowledge-based questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For example, an airline that\u2019s hiring flight attendants might instruct applicants to say, \u201cPlease fasten your seat belts\u201d in French within a few seconds. But you may have much more time to explain why you think you\u2019d make a great flight attendant.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of how much time you\u2019re allowed to respond, you may feel nervous recording your answers. Gillman\u2019s advice: Radiate authenticity. If you rely too heavily on scripts or try to sound perfect, you risk coming across as canned or fake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you can do the interview at your convenience,\u201d he said. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> to the employer and be there at a certain time.\u201d <\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetPodcast\n            inline\n    scope-web,mobileapps\n    scope-web,mobileapps\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetPodcast\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"media-object-podcast\">\n<div id=\"\" class=\"audioplayer\" data-audio=\"C7D48A81-7F9E-4F51-A5B2-CEBBA134F483\" data-theme=\"wsj-article\" data-show-header=\"true\" data-show-subscribe=\"true\">\n<div class=\"audioPlayerInner\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       Peter Laipson, a Massachusetts-based educational leader, has participated in three one-way video interviews using Spark Hire, another popular platform used by employers. In each case, he received the interview questions beforehand and had unlimited time to plan his responses.\u00a0\u201cI could do as many iterations as I like,\u201d he said. But with a time limit of three minutes for most of the questions, he kept pruning his prerecorded answers.\u00a0\u201cThe time goes quickly,\u201d he said. \u201cYou need to be concise.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He warns that it\u2019s tempting to talk faster to cover more ground. But he advises candidates to speak slower and more conversationally\u2014and stick to the main headlines of their answer without feeling compelled to elaborate on every idea.\u00a0While he appreciated the chance to present his best self to potential employers, he acknowledges that it\u2019s more time-consuming than a live two-way interview. Even though each video interview only consisted of three or four questions, it took him a few hours to nail his responses within the allotted time frame.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Laipson, who\u2019s in his 50s, feels confident about his speaking skills.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know how a shy person would feel about it,\u201d he said. \u201cIt does disadvantage people whose skill set doesn\u2019t include responding to questions in a pithy way.\u201d\u00a0In a two-way conversation, both parties can pose follow-up questions. If someone uses an acronym, the other person can ask, \u201cWhat\u2019s that stand for?\u201d If a candidate makes a claim or cites statistics, the interviewer can ask, \u201cWhat\u2019s your source for that information?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The unidirectional nature of one-way video interviews precludes lively conversations where verbal volleying begets mutual understanding and learning. And time constraints can limit a candidate\u2019s ability to provide a complete answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cYou may only have time to make a few points if you\u2019re cut off at three minutes,\u201d Laipson said. \u201cIn a live interview, the interviewer can ask, \u2018Have you thought about this other possibility?\u2019 That lets you elaborate on your thinking.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The good <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> is the software is generally user-friendly and simple to master.\u00a0\u201cWe try to make it as technically frictionless as possible,\u201d Gillman said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Laipson found the Spark Hire platform easy to use, adding that it offers an introductory video that walks first-timers through the process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Learn how to shake up your financial routine at the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/moneyfestival.marketwatch.com\/?mod=article_inline\" class=\"icon none\">Best New Ideas in Money Festival<\/a> on Sept. 21 and Sept. 22 in New York.
