If you had told me several years ago that something called\u00a0Happy Death Day<\/em> <\/strong>would end up blossoming into one of my all-time favorite horror franchises, I would\u2019ve believed you, because I am a silly boy. Nonetheless, if you have yet to give yourself over to the joys of the\u00a0Happy Death Day<\/em> series<\/a>, I urge you to reconsider, because they\u2019re wonderful. Only two films exist at the moment, but fans \u2013 and people involved with the movies \u2013 are clamoring for a third. And producer Jason Blum<\/strong> swears he\u2019s \u201cworking overtime\u201d to find a way to make that happen.<\/p>\n

Happy Death Day 2U<\/em> <\/strong>was by no means a box office bomb. In fact, it grossed\u00a0 $64 million worldwide against a $9 million budget. But here\u2019s the problem: it didn\u2019t have legs. In its second week of release, the movie dropped by 48%, which isn\u2019t exactly what the folks at Blumhouse like to see. Still, fans of the series \u2013 like me \u2013 are holding out hope for a third film. And apparently, so is Jason Blum.<\/p>\n

Speaking with Yahoo, Blum said of\u00a0Happy Death Day 3<\/em><\/strong>: \u201cLet me tell you, I\u2019m working overtime on it. Believe me.\u201d Now, this seems a bit disingenuous to me \u2013 just front the money, Blum! You\u2019re good for it! But still, it\u2019s good to know that Blumhouse hasn\u2019t completely abandoned the idea.\u00a0Happy Death Day 2U<\/em> has a set-up for a third movie, and back when the first sequel came out, writer-director Christopher Landon<\/strong> said: \u201cI definitely have the third movie in my head.\u201d<\/p>\n

The first\u00a0Happy Death Day<\/em>, released in 2017, is a lot of fun, introducing us to shallow college student\u00a0Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe<\/strong>). Tree ends up caught in a\u00a0Groundhog Day<\/em>-like time loop, where a masked killer keeps stalking and killing her on her birthday, over and over again. The film succeeded primarily due to some clever twists and Rothe\u2019s performance, which is dynamite.\u00a0Happy Death Day 2U<\/em> followed in 2019, and it ended up being even better than the first film. Once again, Rothe shined, and made me ask, aloud, \u201cWhy the hell isn\u2019t she a bigger star?\u201d The sequel also expanded the world of the first film, and introduced weird (and fun) new ideas.<\/p>\n

Rothe is on board for a third film. In a past interview, she said: \u201cI would love if we had the opportunity to complete the trilogy. I know that Chris has it all mapped out in his genius brain, but I also know that we only want to complete it if we get to do it right. I think it\u2019s just a question of seeing if the opportunity for that exists in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rothe added:<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the funny thing is I have a feeling whether it\u2019s now or in five years or ten or twenty, if we pull a Jamie Lee Curtis from Halloween<\/em> and Tree comes back as a badass 50-year-old, I know that we will get to tell the rest of the story. I love Tree, I love that character so much and I feel very, very grateful to have been a part of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I admire Rothe\u2019s optimism, but I really hope we don\u2019t have to wait until she\u2019s 50-years-old before we get that third film. I can\u2019t wait that long.<\/p>\n
