Like many other new Canadians, he wanted to expand his horizons in his adopted home. With a background in finance in his native Philippines and a degree in business, he found a job at Sun Life Financial, one of Canada\u2019s largest insurance and financial services companies. But he also saw a need for people to help new immigrants navigate the Canadian financial world and plan for their futures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI wanted to help people in the same boat as we had been in,\u201d Mallari says. \u201cBut I had no idea how to incorporate everything involved in real financial planning. That\u2019s when I decided to educate myself.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He earned his Qualified Associate Financial Planner\u2122 designation, and today he is president of Cambria Financial Solutions. The Burnaby, B.C.-based financial advisory firm serves a diverse group of about 3,000 clients, including business owners, young professionals and, of course, new Canadians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since FP Canada launched QAFP\u2122 certification in 2020, it has become an increasingly popular way to start a career in financial planning, and for some, it\u2019s a stepping stone to the organization\u2019s Certified Financial Planner\u00ae designation. There are now nearly 2,000 QAFP professionals in Canada, each armed with the skills, knowledge and ethical standards to understand clients\u2019 everyday financial planning needs and to offer expert advice tailored to their unique circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Financial_planners_with_highly_regarded_credentials_such_as_FP_Canadas_Certified_Financial_Planner%C2%AE_certification_and_Qualified_Associate_Financial_Planner%E2%84%A2_certification_have_a_strong_competitive_advantage_says_Van_Cauwenberghe\"><\/span><b><i>Financial planners with highly regarded credentials, such as FP Canada\u2019s Certified Financial Planner\u00ae certification and Qualified Associate Financial Planner\u2122 certification, have a strong competitive advantage, says Van Cauwenberghe.<\/i><\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To earn the QAFP designation, candidates must take both technical and professional courses, some of which may be done as part of a diploma or degree program. They must also complete at least a year of qualifying work experience and pass a national exam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CFP\u00ae candidates must have a degree from an accredited post-secondary institution \u2014 in any discipline, although a focus on business or finance is helpful. There\u2019s extensive coursework, a three-year work experience requirement, and an exam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The educational process doesn\u2019t end with certification. Both QAFP and CFP professionals must commit to ongoing professional development to maintain their credentials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Whether you choose QAFP certification or CFP certification, a career in financial planning goes far beyond crunching numbers. \u201cIt is a relationship business,\u201d Mallari says. \u201cI spend most of my day in front of clients, getting to know their priorities and goals when it comes to their financial well-being.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Graduate with skills for an in-demand financial planning career.
