Last year was a particularly rough time for the Vancouver-based vocalist. She\u2019d lost her serving job\u2014and all of her music gigs\u2014due to COVID. \u201cI was eating up all my savings just to survive,\u201d she says. Jessia was sitting in her car the day she recorded the video clip that would launch her into viral territory. \u201cMaybe I\u2019m not pretty, maybe I\u2019m just fun, \u2019cause I got a belly, and I got a bum,\u201d she sang, pounding out a beat on <span class=\"s2\">the steering wheel. Within hours, the <\/span>clip had surpassed a million views on<span class=\"s2\"> TikTok.<\/span> <span class=\"s3\">\u201cI thought there was a glitch in the system,\u201d<\/span> she recalls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s3\">For Jessia, who is set to play Rifflandia Music Festival in Victoria on September 18, fame has been a long <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>. Born Jessika Harling to a music-teacher mother, she started singing at age two and writing her own songs at 11. At the time of her fateful video, Jessia had been gigging for five years. Her car-karaoke clip quickly caught the attention of fellow Canadian pop-electronic artist elijah woods, who offered to finish the song with her. The end result, \u201cI\u2019m Not Pretty,\u201d hit 25 million streams within a month of its release.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1239726 aligncenter lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/JESSIA-MACLEANS-WILLIAM-UKOH-2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"3000\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s3\">Jessia\u2019s lyrics tap into emotional subject matter, like lost love and body dysmorphia. \u201cI think everyone has struggled with their body at some point,\u201d she says. \u201cSociety brainwashes us into wanting what we can\u2019t have.\u201d She\u2019s received thousands of supportive messages from fans\u2014teens and postpartum mothers alike.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s3\">Jessia also found an ally in Grammy Award\u2013winning singer and producer Ryan Tedder, who reached out via DM, signed her to Republic Records after a Zoom meeting last October, and brought her along as an opening act on his band\u2019s 22-city European tour this spring.
