\n The University of North Carolina\u2019s student news<\/a>paper is accusing the school of creating a coronavirus \u201cclusterf\u2013k\u2019\u2019 by pushing to return kids to campus \u2014 only to have to reverse course within days amid outbreaks.<\/p>\n

In a blistering editorial published in the Daily Tarheel on Monday, the writers said, \u201cWe all saw this coming\u201d \u2014 but the administration was too busy treating students like \u201ccash cows\u2019\u2019 to pay attention as it gambled with lives.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne thing\u2019s for sure \u2014 [their] roadmap leads straight to hell,\u2019\u2019 the editorial said of school officials.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe administration continues to prove they have no shame, and the bar for basic decency keeps getting lower.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

The prestigious Chapel Hill school started its fall semester last week with campus housing and in-person learning \u2014 against the advice of local county health officials, who recommended extremely limited student residence and online classes for at least the first five weeks.<\/p>\n

Within six days, there were at least four coronavirus \u201cclusters\u2019\u2019 \u2014 which the school defined as five or more cases in \u201cclose proximity\u2019\u2019 \u2014 reported in three campus residence halls and a fraternity.<\/p>\n

Now, the administration has switched to all undergraduate online learning and said it must \u201cde-densify\u2019\u2019 the campus \u2014 leaving thousands of students faced with potentially having to head back home just days after arriving.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re angry \u2014 and we\u2019re scared,\u2019\u2019 the editorial writers said. \u201cWe\u2019re tired of the gaslighting, tired of the secrecy, tired of being treated like cash cows by a University with such blatant disregard for our lives.<\/p>\n

\u201cUniversity leadership should have expected students, many of whom are now living on their own for the first time, to be reckless. Reports of parties throughout the weekend come as no surprise,\u2019\u2019 the editorial said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThough these students are not faultless, it was the University\u2019s responsibility to disincentivize such gatherings by reconsidering its plans to operate in-person earlier on.\u201d<\/p>\n

University Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz\u2019s defense was that the health department\u2019s recommendation was not a mandate.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs much as we believe we have worked diligently to help create a healthy and safe campus living and learning environment, we believe the current data presents an untenable situation,\u201d he told the Huffington Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs we have always said, the health and safety of our campus community is paramount, and we will continue to modify and adapt our plan when necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n

The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 19,200 and ranked 29th in the nation for universities, according to US News.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
