Who but Ms. Gu\u00f0mundsd\u00f3ttir could return to a world so fundamentally broken and unflinchingly cruel with the same wide-eyed vulnerability she brought to her global <i>Debut<\/i> nearly 30 years ago? It\u2019s the same radical openness that\u2019s made her one of the most compelling \u2014 and complicated \u2014 artists operating in her lifetime, sharing eight uniquely wonderful solo studio LPs in the interim, as well as a vast body of collaborative and audiovisual work.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            In the spirit of total honesty and direct communication, the Icelandic luminary shared plans late last month for a career-spanning podcast exploring \u201cthe textures, timbres and emotional landscapes\u201d of each of her albums in chronological order. (The first three episodes \u2014 on <i>Debut<\/i>, <i>Post<\/i>, and <i>Homogenic<\/i>, arrived September 1 and the fourth, on <i>Vespertine<\/i>, drops Thursday.) The <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> came a week after she announced <i>Fossora<\/i>, her first new full-length since 2017\u2019s <i>Utopia<\/i>, due out September 30 via One Little Independent Records. Its <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">theme<\/a> is \u201cmushroom life,\u201d and she\u2019s described it as \u201ca pacifist, idealistic album with flutes and synths and birds,\u201d all of which will accompany Serpentwithfeet, Indonesian dance duo <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/gabbermodusoperandi\/?hl=en\">Gabber Modus Operandi<\/a>, and Bj\u00f6rk\u2019s two children on the record\u2019s guest list. <\/p>\n<p>            She\u2019s now shared that record\u2019s lead single, \u201cAtopos,\u201d featuring GMO\u2019s DJ <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/kasimyn\/?hl=en\">Kasimyn<\/a>, who is credited with \u201cbeats\u201d and as a co-writer, while Bj\u00f6rk is listed as the song\u2019s sole producer. \u201c[It\u2019s a] good intro &#8230;. kinda like Fossora\u00b4s passport,\u201d she wrote in a tweet announcing the track\u2019s release. \u201cSonically a heavy bottom-ended bass world. We have 6 bass clarinets, punchy sub drilling, nesting and digging us into the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            \u201cThe lyrics are inspired by what [French literary theorist] roland barthes described as the unclassifiable OTHER,\u201d she added later. \u201c\u2018our differences are irrelevant. our union is stronger than us.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            Sonically, the song is an emphatic return to form, with the aforementioned bass clarinet sextet facilitating a groove that sounds like a celestial tango conducted by Astor Piazzola\u2019s astral projection at Jabba the Hutt\u2019s palace. The track devolves into a heavy techno remix of itself in its final 40 seconds, completing the mind fuck. <\/p>\n<p>            Lyrically, it\u2019s maybe not as deep as all that: \u201cAre these not just excuses to not connect? \/ Our differences are irrelevant \/ To insist on absolute justice at all times \/ It blocks connection,\u201d sounds a lot like the losing end of a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> argument, and the shroominess of it all is a bit on the nose. \u201cHope is a muscle\u201d is a good line, though.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            Where the fungal imagery fails in abstract, though, it delivers tenfold in the track\u2019s Vi\u00f0ar Logi-directed video, in which Bj\u00f6rk appears as two different types of fauna in an eerie cave full of mushrooms, both human (the clarinetists) and decorative. Its final, clubby passage is illustrated with a rare Bj\u00f6rk fist-pumping sequence that\u2019s worth the price of entry on its own.
