\n Culture critic: Doctors\u2019 James Bond Moment<\/strong><\/p>\n

Recommendations by some 1,200 medical professionals urging folks to join the Black Lives Matter protests amid the pandemic sound like \u201ca James Bond movie in which a Bond super-villain recruits \u2018top scientists\u2019 to spread a deadly virus,\u201d quips John O\u2019Sullivan at The Pipeline \u2014 \u00ad\u201ceerily similar,\u201d in fact, to the plot of \u201cOn Her Majesty\u2019s Secret Service.\u201d Spreading COVID-19 isn\u2019t the medics\u2019 goal, but their attempts to expand their public-health role into a political one is becoming a \u201cfamiliar\u201d pattern. Indeed, Lancet editor Richard Horton openly argues that doctors have a duty to become political. Alas, doctors \u201care no more expert at combating racism than the Man on the Clapham Omnibus.\u201d And the protests, \u201cwith their accompanying riots, are at least as likely to be exacerbating racist feelings\u201d as \u201cameliorating them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Foreign desk: Beijing\u2019s Bold Badness<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWhile America tears itself apart with endless internal quarreling and media<\/a> psychodramas,\u201d Victor Davis Hanson notes at The Daily Caller, \u201cChina is now on the move \u2014 without apologies.\u201d Beijing decided \u201cif it\u2019s going to be blamed for the spreading virus due to its deceit anyway, it might as well not let such a pandemic go to waste.\u201d With bids to \u201cstrangle what was left of Hong Kong\u2019s enfeebled democracy\u201d and \u201cramp up its perennial border confrontations with India\u201d: \u201cWhat better way to show the world that a defiant China is dangerous than agitate the world\u2019s largest democracy?\u201d The COVID-19 crisis has forced the Middle Kingdom \u201cto give up its nice-guy fa\u00e7ade\u201d: Its response to outrage over its virus coverup has gone from \u201cSo what?\u201d to \u201cWhat exactly are you going to do about it?\u201d<\/p>\n

Campaign watch: The Perils of \u2018Defund\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

Calls to defund police have \u201cgrown increasingly loud\u201d \u2014 but, CNN\u2019s Chris Cillizza observes, that push \u201ccarries massive political risk for Democrats.\u201d National Democrats have \u201cspent the last few days dodging about whether they support defunding efforts\u201d \u2014 unsurprisingly, as \u00addefunding the police is \u201ca clear political loser.\u201d Democrats must alienate either their base of \u201cactivists .\u2009.\u2009. demanding radical change\u201d or \u201ca \u00admajority of the country,\u201d which doesn\u2019t support the move. Unless they can \u201cchange the conversation to be about reforming\u201d rather than abolishing police, \u201cthe call to \u2018Defund the Police\u2019 will continue to be music to Trump\u2019s ears.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gotham journal: Pathetic Pols\u2019 Self-Praise<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWith the economy in tatters, storefronts boarded up or broken and citizens in the street demanding justice, Bill de Blasio and Andrew Cuomo speak with one voice as they say to New Yorkers: \u2018You\u2019re welcome,\u2019\u200a\u201d snarks Spectator USA\u2019s Matt McDonald. The pair smugly celebrated the state\u2019s reopening Monday, after \u201cweeks of state-mandated lockdown, thousands of preventable nursing-home deaths and days of angry protests and looting.\u201d That the restart just began \u201cmust be news<\/a> to the thousands\u201d who took to the streets earlier, including the mayor\u2019s daughter, Chiara, \u201cwho was arrested for blocking traffic.\u201d Cuomo, meanwhile, \u201cspent the virus season bantering with his brother on CNN and shirking the blame for New York\u2019s nursing-home catastrophe.\u201d It seems \u201cno matter the crisis, Cuomo and de Blasio have settled into a routine reaction: Remain oblivious, make several missteps, blame each other, declare victory regardless. If it ain\u2019t broke \u2014 like half of Manhattan \u2014 why fix it?\u201d<\/p>\n

From the right: A Cultural Civil War<\/strong><\/p>\n

This week, \u201cAmerica woke up to a moment of clarity,\u201d sighs The Federalist\u2019s Ben Domenech: It\u2019s \u201cin the midst of a great cultural civil war.\u201d While Americans were \u201clargely unified\u201d in \u201canger and frustration\u201d after George Floyd\u2019s tragic killing, \u201cwe\u2019ve been coming apart ever since.\u201d From the protests, which have \u201cnow led to more than a dozen deaths and hundreds of millions of dollars in property damage and theft,\u201d to \u201cimages of woke white protesters\u201d kneeling and \u201capologizing to the mob for sins they did not commit,\u201d the nation faces a clash of law and order versus \u201crevolutionary racial radicalism.\u201d Sadly, elite corporations and institutions have kowtowed to this \u201cleftist campus antagonism,\u201d now \u201cpowerful and tangible.\u201d For these new radicals, \u201cyou will kneel, or you will pay.\u201d<\/p>\n
