In 2016, the couple pooled funds with Joy\u2019s brother and sister-in-law to buy a four-bedroom, three-bathroom<span class=\"s3\"> semi-detached house in Pickering, Ontario, in order to save money and build equity. The property was roomy, and it had to be. In addition to the two couples, Joy\u2019s niece and nephew, her 71-year-old mother, Corazon, and the couple\u2019s shih-tzu, Ding, would be living there, too. During COVID, Joy set up an office in the living room\u2014which had no doors\u2014so she would often overhear other conversations, like her brother Edizon\u2019s work meetings. \u201cIt felt cramped,\u201d Joy recalls. \u201cThe kids were studying there, too.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Last year, when their mortgage was up, Louie and Joy set out to buy their own place in the Pickering area with Corazon, so they could take care of her as she got older. They set a budget of $700,000, but even properties listed in their price range were selling in excess of $800,000. They viewed six places\u2014detached, semis and townhomes\u2014in the span of two months, and put in zero offers. \u201cThe market was crazy,\u201d Joy says. \u201cWe couldn\u2019t afford<i> anything<\/i>.\u201d Louie\u2019s company had locations across Canada, so they started considering listings that were further afield. Two of Joy\u2019s Alberta-based friends suggested she look at places in Calgary, where real estate was miles more reasonable than in the Greater Toronto Area. \u201cAll I knew about Calgary was from friends who posted on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a> that they\u2019d gone to the Stampede,\u201d Louie says. \u201cWe were thinking of living there as a new adventure.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1240240\" style=\"width: 3010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"wp-image-1240240 size-full lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Macleans-the-move-calgary-affordable-spacious-housing-scenery.jpg\" alt=\"Calgary landscape overlooking houses \" width=\"3000\" height=\"2000\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Since moving to Calgary, Louie and Joy have ventured to become a bit more outdoorsy, enjoying the Calgary scenery. (Photography by Allison Seto)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_hunt\"><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b>The hunt<\/b><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s3\">Joy and Louie booked a week-long <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> out west in September of 2021, scheduling 13 viewings with the help of a local realtor. They were aiming to spend $500,000 on a two- or three-bedroom home with a finished basement and a main-floor office for Joy. The extra funds would go toward new furniture, scratching Joy\u2019s interior-decorating itch.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s3\">They initially toured a couple of detached models in Calgary\u2019s southeast end, but they lacked office space and stairs that Corazon could safely navigate. \u201cI\u2019m getting older too,\u201d Joy says. \u201cWe needed a landing.\u201d Each night, the couple shared photos and video-called with Corazon, who wasn\u2019t picky\u2014she <\/span>just wanted more space to herself. Ten hous<span class=\"s3\">es in, Louie and Joy were feeling discouraged but determined. \u201cWe weren\u2019t willing to go back to Ontario without finding a new home,\u201d says Joy. The 12th tour was the charm: they fell in love with a three-bedroom, four-bathroom detached model in the northwestern neighbourhood of Evanston. (Photography by Allison Seto)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p4\">The second floor featured three bedrooms, plus a bonus room for Corazon\u2019s sewing and soap operas. The backyard was fenced in, so Ding could roam (relatively) freely. Joy and Louie put in an on-budget offer of $500,000 after the viewing. The owners accepted and agreed to an October 2021 move-out date.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s4\">Life in the Prairies is working out <\/span>nicely: Louie\u2019s working at a new franchise<span class=\"s4\"> of his old restaurant. Corazon loves having enough kitchen space to make pandesal (a Filipino bread). And Joy\u2019s meetings are no longer interrupted by her brother. One major departure from Pickering is the scenery. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to be more outdoorsy,\u201d Joy says, adding that they\u2019ve already visited Banff, Ghost Lake and even the Stampede. The family has welcomed a few visitors from Ontario, but no permanent stays\u2014yet. Louie\u2019s sister has eyeballed the area\u2019s prices.
