“#Jets\u2019 \u2018big\u2019 rookie Mekhi Becton no longer embarrassed by size<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Mekhi Becton has heard it his whole life \u2014 he is big, like really big.<\/p>\n

There was a time when the Jets\u2019 first-round pick did not embrace his size.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was definitely insecure growing up, being a bigger kid,\u201d Becton said.<\/p>\n

Growing up in Virginia, Becton said kids talked about him because he was bigger than normal. When he went swimming, he would wear a tank top because he was embarrassed by his size.<\/p>\n

Now? That 6-foot-7, 370-pound frame has Jets coaches dreaming of what he can do and teammates marveling at what they are seeing on the practice field from the left tackle.<\/p>\n

When you talk to anyone around the Jets about Becton, there is one word you always hear, \u201cbig,\u201d and Becton is OK with that.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been hearing it since I\u2019ve been little,\u201d said Becton, sounding a bit like Yogi Berra. \u201cIt\u2019s nothing new to me. I\u2019m used to it. I embrace it now. I like hearing that I\u2019m big.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Jets, who took Becton No. 11 overall, can only hope that opponents walk away from game<\/a>s this year marveling at his size. Early in training camp, Becton has looked like a typical high draft choice. He has moments when he looks ready to play and others where you are reminded he still has a lot to learn.<\/p>\n

Becton has impressed his coaches with how prepared he has been. With a lack of spring practice, all rookies have an additional hurdle to clear this year. The Jets did not get onto the practice field until Friday for a real football practice.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s clearly hit the [play]book all summer long,\u201d offensive line coach Frank Pollack said. \u201cHe left the spring in a good spot as far as understanding what we\u2019re doing. He\u2019s hit the ground running since he\u2019s been here. Every time I\u2019ve got a question for him in front of the guys, he\u2019s hit it out of the park. He\u2019s right on top of it. If he doesn\u2019t know the answer, it\u2019s like a five-second pause and then he turns the page to go right to the notes where he wrote it down.\u201d<\/p>\n

Becton has been working with the starters in training camp as the Jets try to get him ready to play for their Sept. 13 opener against the Bills.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, it\u2019s just getting him experience in reps out on the grass,\u201d Pollack said. \u201cYou see a lot of different things and grow from that standpoint. Against our defense you\u2019re getting a ton of variety of looks and getting a lot of good, teachable moments.\u201d<\/p>\n

Becton worked in the offseason with offensive line coach Duke Manyweather. He looks like he is in shape, but said he is working to lose weight still. He reported to training camp at 370 pounds after weighing 364 at the combine.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is definitely not the best shape I\u2019ve been in. I\u2019m 370 now,\u201d Becton said. \u201cI definitely want to get lower. I\u2019m definitely still trying to get into my best shape.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pollack said the Jets need to strike a balance when it comes to Becton\u2019s ideal weight. They want him to drop a few pounds so he\u2019ll move better, but not so many that he loses any of his power.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs 370 too high? Yeah,\u201d Pollack said. \u201cIs there a magic number? We\u2019re working on that. He\u2019s learning. He\u2019s a young guy. His body is going to mature and change over time.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Monday, Becton showed what he was capable of when he blocked linebacker Neville Hewitt and knocked him to the ground.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt felt good,\u201d Becton said of that hit. \u201cIt felt really good because I haven\u2019t been able to do that in a while.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 21-year-old is getting used to life in the NFL, including being on the team with veteran stars like Le\u2019Veon Bell and Frank Gore. Becton was asked if he has had any moments when it hit him that he is in the NFL with them as teammates.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s every day, honestly,\u201d Becton said. \u201cI just look at those guys in awe. I\u2019ve seen Frank Gore playing when I was growing up. It\u2019s just great to be in the same room as him. It\u2019s just amazing having those two guys behind me.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
