\n Jim Belushi is eager for you to see how his career has gone to pot.<\/p>\n

The actor, Blues Brother and TV veteran (ABC\u2019s \u201cAccording to Jim\u201d) stars in \u201cGrowing Belushi,\u201d a three-part Discovery series<\/a> taking viewers inside the legal cannabis business he runs from his southern Oregon spread, Belushi\u2019s Farm. It premieres Wednesday at 10 p.m.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce you engage with this plant, it kind of leads you where you want to go,\u201d says Belushi, 66, who brought the now-93 acre farm on the Rogue River just as marijuana was being legalized in Oregon. \u201cI was like, \u2018Wow, new agriculture, let\u2019s do that,’\u201d he says. \u201cAnd it started me on that path.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s taken me to a whole different level.\u201d<\/p>\n

Belushi says he\u2019s \u201ca boots-on-the-ground guy\u201d and regularly visits marijuana dispensaries. His business philosophy changed, he says, when he encountered an Iraq War vet on one of those visits.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said, \u2018I was a medic and I saw things that happ<\/a>ened to the human body that nobody should ever see.\u2019 He had PTSD and had gotten off Oxycontin with cannabis and said, \u2018I couldn\u2019t talk to my kids or my wife and I couldn\u2019t sleep, but your Black Diamond OG [cannabis] allows me to do that.\u2019 He teared up and hugged me.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a business about healing,\u201d he says. \u201cPeople are suffering from depression, PTSD, Alzheimer\u2019s, anxiety. I always followed my passion and the money came and the business behind it \u2014 but this vet changed my purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n

And, if you\u2019re wondering, Belushi doesn\u2019t sample his product too much.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a microdoser. If I have a joint it lasts me like 10 days,\u201d he says. \u201cI take 2.5 milligrams of [THC-infused] Bhang Chocolate \u2014 it\u2019s an easy sleep and I wake up feeling great \u2014 and maybe a little hit of [hybrid cannabis] Cherry Pie \u2014 which makes me pleasant and charming and chills my anxiety and I get along with my wife.<\/p>\n

\u201cI call it \u2018The Marriage Counselor.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Most of \u201cGrowing Belushi\u201d shows him running the business he started in 2015 and interacting with his staffers, including his prone-to-exaggeration cousin, Chris \u2014 who oversees the day-to-day operations \u2014 and young growers Ben and Alex, whom he\u2019s known since they were kids (he\u2019s friends with their father). Viewers also get a glimpse at his personal life.<\/p>\n

Another featured character is Jack Murtha, aka marijuana celebrity \u201cCaptain Jack,\u201d whose rare strain of Afghan weed was known as \u201cThe Smell of \u2018SNL’\u201d when Belushi\u2019s late brother, John, rose to stardom on \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d in the mid-\u201970s.<\/p>\n

\u201cI met Jack when Danny [Aykroyd] and I started doing the Blues Brothers and we were playing an East Coast gig,\u201d Belushi says. \u201cJack and Danny were friends, and when I started my business, Danny said, \u2018You can have Captain Jack\u2019s strain. It\u2019s very unique.\u2019 Where else would those guys [on \u2018SNL\u2019] stay up and get stimulated and come up with \u2018The Coneheads?’\u201d<\/p>\n

Belushi mentions his brother several times \u2014 John\u2019s wife, Judy, appears in the series, along with Aykroyd \u2014 and says he thinks Belushi\u2019s drug use, and eventual overdose death in 1982, was partly caused by a traumatic brain injury he suffered while playing high school football.<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw my brother have a seizure in my house and we didn\u2019t know what that was from,\u201d he says. \u201cIt was from banging his head and getting his bell rung. That\u2019s what I believe. If Johnny was a pothead, he\u2019d be alive today.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the second episode I go to Colombia and I go up in a helicopter and ride into the \u2018Red Zone,\u2019 which is where all the coke is grown,\u201d he says. \u201cI look down on those fields and there\u2019s a moment that really struck me. I went, \u2018Wow, these fields are really cemeteries, all those people who died from that coke.\u2019 I wondered, looking at these fields, if I\u2019m looking at the coke my brother used.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf Colombia can take these fields and convert them to cannabis fields, they can heal people instead of killing them.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody is screaming inside,\u201d he says. \u201cSometimes we take a Xanax or Ambien or a prescription medication. [Cannabis] is the safest, most non-violent choice. It helps repair families in trauma \u2014 not only losing a sibling, like me, but illness in the family, the loss of a job or a house \u2026 I\u2019ve experienced it myself with divorce. It\u2019s for the battle in all of us.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the reasons cannabis is so prolific is that it finds a peaceful way to stop the screaming.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
