As Meguro\u2019s first attempt at making his own game, he <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lied to Kodansha\u2018s Game Creators Lab, an independent game developer support organization. Although not selected, he was awarded 500,000 yen and raised the rest of the game\u2019s development funds through Kickstarter.<\/p>\n<p>Despite leaving ATLUS, he still plans to work with the company as a freelance composer. We ask for details below.<\/p>\n<p><!-- AD: content --><br \/>\n        <strong>Now that you\u2019re not working at ATLUS anymore, does that mean you could work with other companies?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Shoji Meguro:<\/strong> \u201cI have a good relationship with ATLUS, so I don\u2019t think I\u2019ll work with other companies for a while. That\u2019s not to say I cant do a collaboration on a song or two with other people, but in terms of doing a full soundtrack, I would only do that with ATLUS right now. But that\u2019s also no promise that I\u2019ll be the composer for future <em>Persona<\/em> games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>How has your original concept for <em>Guns Undarkness<\/em> that you came up with in 2005 changed until now?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Meguro:<\/strong> \u201cIt changed almost entirely. All that stayed the same was that I knew I wanted to make a JRPG with guns in a science-fiction setting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The story outline mentions there was divide between the rich and poor. Does this game have a political message?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Meguro:<\/strong> \u201cNo, I don\u2019t like to think about politics, so it\u2019s not focused on any political topics. In this world the divide of rich and poor lead to a war where the world is destroyed and we have to see what humanity does after such a big reset.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Guns Undarkness\" title=\"Guns Undarkness\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gematsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Guns-Undarkness-Interview_09-21-22_002-320x180.jpg\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gematsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Guns-Undarkness-Interview_09-21-22_002-320x180.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.gematsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Guns-Undarkness-Interview_09-21-22_002-480x270.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.gematsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Guns-Undarkness-Interview_09-21-22_002-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.gematsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Guns-Undarkness-Interview_09-21-22_002-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.gematsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Guns-Undarkness-Interview_09-21-22_002-1280x720.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/www.gematsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Guns-Undarkness-Interview_09-21-22_002-1440x810.jpg 1440w, https:\/\/www.gematsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Guns-Undarkness-Interview_09-21-22_002.jpg 1920w\" data-sizes=\"auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Silly question, but in choosing the year 2045 for the setting, was that year chosen at random or is there a particular reason?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Meguro:<\/strong> \u201cI try to look at the real world timeline of events and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> development and come up with a conclusion that, in such and such year technology might be at a certain point. So when I laid all that out I came up with 2045.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>In screenshots and videos, the main character\u2019s name is simply \u201cProtagonist.\u201d Does this imply you can name the character?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Meguro:<\/strong> \u201cAh yes, the player will decide his name. This is a bit of a spoiler, but there\u2019s a scene where Will says something like \u2018Hey, register your name.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Characters are also often shown with a particular weapon. Is everyone limited to one type of weapon, such as Naomi with pistols, or can you change them?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Meguro:<\/strong> \u201cThat\u2019s a good question. For the protagonist, you can choose any weapon you want, while side characters specialize in one weapon type, like pistols with Naomi, but they also have a secondary weapon you can choose for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can you talk a bit about the stealth system?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Meguro:<\/strong> \u201cYou don\u2019t avoid encounters outright like in some games. Instead you try to sneak up on an enemy and hide your characters around cover to try to get the best positioning for a sneak attack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen aiming at enemies, a percentage of accuracy can be seen. The longer you set your sights on an enemy the more your accuracy will go up, which leads to more damage when starting the battle in addition to not missing. It\u2019s a risk, however. The longer you hold the higher the accuracy goes up, but the chance the enemy may turn around and spot you also goes up. So you\u2019ll be in a situation where you\u2019re aiming and thinking \u2018come on, just a little more to 100 percent\u2026 please don\u2019t turn around.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>That sounds a bit like <em>XCOM<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Meguro:<\/strong> \u201cOh, I love <em>XCOM<\/em>. He (points to Yuki Katayama, Kodansha) showed me it saying \u2018Hey, try this game!\u2019 and I got so hooked on it that I fell behind on my work (laughs).\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Guns Undarkness\" title=\"Guns Undarkness\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gematsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Guns-Undarkness-Interview_09-21-22_003-320x180.jpg\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gematsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Guns-Undarkness-Interview_09-21-22_003-320x180.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.gematsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Guns-Undarkness-Interview_09-21-22_003-480x270.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.gematsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Guns-Undarkness-Interview_09-21-22_003-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.gematsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Guns-Undarkness-Interview_09-21-22_003-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.gematsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Guns-Undarkness-Interview_09-21-22_003-1280x720.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/www.gematsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Guns-Undarkness-Interview_09-21-22_003-1440x810.jpg 1440w, https:\/\/www.gematsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Guns-Undarkness-Interview_09-21-22_003.jpg 1920w\" data-sizes=\"auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<p><strong>I see there is a relationship system. Is it similar to <em>Persona<\/em>? What are the benefits of developing your relationships?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Meguro:<\/strong> \u201cYes, it\u2019s very similar to <em>Persona<\/em>. You can talk with your teammates to raise your relationship with them which leads to unlocking team combination attacks in battle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Now that you\u2019re developing a whole game rather than just music, you have to consider many things like modeling, animation, level design, and so on. What\u2019s been the most fun and most challenging?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Meguro:<\/strong> \u201cIt\u2019s all very difficult. (Laughs.) It\u2019s hard to choose one thing because I get tired of things quickly. I\u2019ll do one thing for a month or two, and then get tired of it and do a different thing for a month or two until I get tired of it and so on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>When making music for games, are they made knowing its for a specific level or scene, or do you just make a bunch of tracks and apply them later?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Meguro:<\/strong> \u201c80 percent of time I make a track for a specific scene or level, and about 20 percent are songs that I made and get placed after the fact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>For video game music, do you have to consider anything game-related like matching the beat to the speed of the character or timing a chorus when some event occurs?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Meguro:<\/strong> \u201cOf course we consider the speed of the track, making sure the song from one scene to the next isn\u2019t too jarring or different\u2014there\u2019s many components involved. Timing isn\u2019t really something I consider, I just make a different track for a different scene.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Before we let you go, is there anything you\u2019d like to say to the fans?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Meguro:<\/strong> \u201cWe\u2019re really excited to meet our goals and make the game for everyone. Seeing everyone\u2019s enthusiasm has given us 120 percent energy to work even harder. I hope fans look forward to the music, and also support us in making our first game. As a designer I\u2019m just like a first-grader with no experience. I will keep working hard to improve the game.
