Now, the Polaris-winning polymath is hitting the small screen with a new CBC variety show, <i>Lido TV<\/i>, premiering this month. The <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> aims to serve as a coping mechanism for those feeling the weight of the world, employing amusingly unorthodox formats\u2014a sunflower puppet naively asking about International Women\u2019s Day (\u201cit\u2019s kind of a complicated subject,\u201d <\/span>Pimienta replies), a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> show called Canada\u2019s Top Land Acknowl<span class=\"s2\">edgers. Like Pimienta herself, <i>Lido TV<\/i> radiates and rages with a knowing wink.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">When I first heard Pimienta\u2019s music more than a decade ago, on the NPR podcast <i>Alt.Latino<\/i>, she was an overseas festival-circuit darling routinely name-dropped on blogs chronicling the sprawling sonic galaxy of the Latin American indie underground. The unconstrained timbre of her otherworldly soprano was revelatory, especially alongside Canada\u2019s then-prevailing <span class=\"s2\">musical homogeneity. With her new show, Pimienta\u2019s bombastic <\/span>presence shakes things up again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">Replete with a Technicolor soundstage set and musical guests such as Nelly Furtado and Shad, plus a cast of characters including a pair of anthropomorphized tomatoes, <i>Lido TV<\/i> evokes the off-kilter sensibility of 1980s Saturday-morning TV, particularly <i>Pee-wee\u2019s Playhouse<\/i>\u2014that is, if Pee-wee Herman had a penchant for surrealist political edutainment. Pimienta intersperses short comedic sketches with documentary <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>ogues and interviews with insightful guests. Along the way, she imparts lessons on wide-ranging topics like feminism, success and Canada\u2019s billion-dollar mineral extraction operations in Colombia.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">In the first episode, our titular impresario visits a record store in her hometown of Barranquilla, Colombia, one among several Caribbean port cities that became spawning grounds for the genre-spanning Afro-Antillean music tradition. \u201cPlaces like this have been looted by people all over the world,\u201d laments the store\u2019s proprietor. In a brief yet pointed exchange, he and Pimienta sum up the cultural legacy of colonial theft and appropriation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">The record store vignette comprises just a few minutes of the series\u2019 debut episode, but it cuts to the core of Pimienta\u2019s creative arc, particularly as it evolved in dialogue with mainstream Canadian discourse. Pimienta may be a winner of Canada\u2019s most prestigious music prize and now running her own show on the national public broadcaster, but she\u2019s still learning to reconcile the whole of who she is, as a person and an artist, with what the culture at large is willing to see. \u201cThere\u2019s always this pressure, this weight on me, like I can\u2019t just be an artist,\u201d Pimienta tells me. \u201cBecause I\u2019m an immigrant and Brown, I have to be seen as a revolutionary. I could be making art about unicorns and rainbows, and it would be seen as the unicorns and rainbows of the revolution.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1240589 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Copy-of-LIDO-TV-BTS-FILM-165.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"1207\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">After watching the first few episodes of <i>Lido TV<\/i>, I suspect this pressure isn\u2019t going away soon. But there <i>are<\/i> unicorns and rainbows, sometimes. While the show confronts heavy subjects, it\u2019s also<i> <\/i>funny. In one scene, Pimienta and Furtado, who strums a pink guitar while Pimienta turns the pages of a children\u2019s book, sing the ABCs\u2014A for apple, B for baby. When they get to C, cacophonous noise disrupts their soothing voices before Pimienta reveals, her face sardonically maniacal, that C stands for colonialism. \u201cWe might talk about the government spending taxpayer dollars on things we don\u2019t really need, but we\u2019ll do it as an ASMR parody,\u201d Pimienta says, laughing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">The series relies on unhinged provocation to skirt the mortal sin of didacticism. In a sketch about beauty standards, a woman ponders whether a Brazilian butt lift would last into the eternal afterlife. An interview with the metal band Kittie turns into a singalong about the toxic online \u201cmanosphere.\u201d There\u2019s even a young man whose erotic awakening is sparked by watching a woman churn butter\u2014a sketch that surely pushes CBC\u2019s lewdness limits. \u201cHumour can be a beautiful olive branch,\u201d says Pimienta.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">In <i>Lido TV<\/i>, Pimienta\u2019s art-school eccentricities distort the public\u2019s expectations like a funhouse mirror. Pimienta dutifully assumes the position of case study in the show\u2019s discussions of gender inequity and racism. Yet there\u2019s a bratty subversiveness in <i>Lido TV<\/i>\u2019s hodgepodge presentation, as though daring anyone to define her by the sum of her identities. It\u2019s all a bit surreal for Pimienta, having free <\/span>rein to distill her proprietary blend of whimsy and political dis<span class=\"s2\">content for a television audience\u2014on behalf of the CBC, to boot. \u201cI think we\u2019re at a crossroads in Canada, where people are finally excited to talk about what really goes on without sugarcoating it,\u201d she says. \u201cThis show lets us focus on who we are now, diverse and culturally abundant.
