Your phone isn\u2019t useless if you forget the unlock code \u2014 you can bypass it and get back in.<\/p>\n<p>As Google tightens security, this has become more difficult on modern versions of Android. But there\u2019s always a way to make your phone usable again, as long as you remember your Google account\u2019s username and its password.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Modern_Versions_of_Android_50_and_Up\"><\/span>Modern Versions of Android (5.0 and Up)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Android used to have a way to bypass your PIN or password, but that feature was removed in Android 5.0.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, this\u00a0means there\u2019s no built-in way to simply reset your pattern, PIN, or password and gain access to your phone or tablet. This does help provide additional protection to your data, however \u2014 attackers have no way of bypassing the passcode unless they actually know it.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_update\"><p><strong>Update, 9\/23\/22:<\/strong> Android 13 was released in August 2022. Android 13 does not contain any features that are comparable to the recovery methods present in older versions of Android from before Android 5.0, either.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>Use Smart Lock in Android 5.0 and Never Unlock Your Phone at Home Again<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Android\u2019s Smart Lock feature may be able to save you. For example, let\u2019s say you\u2019ve\u00a0set up Smart Lock on your Android phone and have it automatically log in\u00a0when it\u2019s on your home Wi-Fi. You can take your phone to that home Wi-FI network and it will automatically unlock for you, even if you can\u2019t remember the normal unlock code.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re left using a few other tricks that might work. For example, on Samsung devices, if you\u2019ve logged into the device with a Samsung account, you can go to the Samsung Find My Mobile website, log in with the same Samsung account, and use the \u201cUnlock my screen\u201d option to remotely remove your device\u2019s lock screen. Other manufacturers might potentially offer similar features if they have a device-tracking website you\u2019ve signed up for.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve already unlocked your bootloader and installed a custom recovery, you may be able to use that environment to remove the code. To find this feature, first enter an incorrect pattern or PIN five times at the lock screen. You\u2019ll see a \u201cForgot pattern,\u201d \u201cforgot PIN,\u201d or \u201cforgot password\u201d button <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ear. Tap it. You can get your device into a usable state again, but that will involve performing a factory reset, wiping the device\u2019s storage, and setting it up again from scratch.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t as bad as it sounds, as most data on a modern Android device should just sync online. Sign in with the same Google account and you\u2019ll have access to your emails, contacts, apps, and practically everything else. You\u2019ll then be able to set up a new unlock code.<\/p>\n<p>If your device has a removable SD card, you\u2019ll probably want to remove the SD card before performing the factory reset, just to ensure any files stored on there won\u2019t be overwritten. It\u2019s probably best to shut down your Android device, remove the SD card, and then continue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>How to Find Your Lost or Stolen Android Phone<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can visit the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/android\/find\">Find My Device<\/a> website and log in with the same Google account you use on that Android device. Select the device you\u2019re locked out of and select \u201cErase\u201d to remotely erase it. You\u2019ll be able to set it up from\u00a0scratch afterwards \u2014 the lock code will be removed, but the device will also be wiped.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve enabled another remote phone or tablet-tracking service, you can probably use its website to remotely wipe your device, too.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-820111\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/erase-device.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"The &quot;Find My Device&quot; page can also be used to erase your device.\" width=\"297\" height=\"500\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>If you can\u2019t reach your phone via the Find My Device page to perform a reset, don\u2019t worry \u2014 you have other options. You can factory-reset your phone or tablet even if you can\u2019t unlock it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>How to Factory Reset Your Android Phone or Tablet When It Won&#8217;t Boot<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The exact way you\u2019ll do this is different on different phones and tablets. You\u2019ll need to boot into your device\u2019s system recovery\u00a0menu and wipe it from there. To do this, you\u2019ll need to turn the device off and turn it on while holding the correct buttons. For example, on the Pixel 6, you have to press and hold the Volume Down and Power buttons at the same time, then, when you see \u201cNo Command,\u201d quickly hold the Volume Up button and the Power button. Use the recovery menu to wipe the device.<\/p>\n<p>Google offers a list of ways to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/pixelphone\/answer\/4596836\">access recovery mode on Pixel devices<\/a>. You may have to perform a web search or check your device manufacturer\u2019s support pages to find out how to reset it.<\/p>\n<p>On devices running Android 5.1, you may have to enter the username and password of the Google account that was previously associated with the device after doing this. This prevents someone else from resetting and using your device. However, you won\u2019t need the old unlock code to regain use\u00a0of\u00a0your hardware.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-226943\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/img_55d9f68e8845d.jpg?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>Modern Android devices work a lot more like Apple\u2019s iPhones and iPads. If you forget the code, you\u2019ll need to reset it to its factory default settings to regain access.
