\n The New York state court system will begin an independent review of its policies to address possible racial inequities \u2014 spurred by the death of George Floyd, officials announced Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The review will be led by lawyer Jeh Johnson, the former Secretary of Homeland Security under the Obama administration, who will look at policies and operations of the courts aimed at addressing racial bias, Chief Judge Janet DiFiore said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe death of George Floyd, and the issues it has brought into harsh focus, are a painful reminder of the repeated injustices and institutional racism that have long undermined the values and unity of our nation,\u201d DiFiore said in a statement. \u201cThe court system\u2019s commitment to these values is especially vital.\u201d<\/p>\n

Johnson, who will hold the title of Special Adviser on Equal Justice in the Courts, will also review the bias education and training practices of court staff including judges and the process of selection and app<\/a>ointment of court staff including officers, the Chief Judge added.<\/p>\n

Johnson \u2014 who volunteered to lead the review \u2014 said, \u201cAbove all else, we depend upon the courts as the place where equal justice before the law is guaranteed. This is an important assignment and I will answer the call with energy and dedication.\u201d<\/p>\n

With the help of two judges, Johnson will submit recommendation on how to improve addressing racial inequities by Oct. 1.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
