Even if you don\u2019t have a Stereo Mix option on your PC, you can easily record the sound coming from any Windows PC.<\/p>\n<p>You can record the sound coming from your PC in numerous ways, and we\u2019re going to show you some of the best we\u2019ve found. The first three options use only software, and the third relies on an old trick that connects your computer\u2019s audio output to its audio input with an audio cable.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Option_1_Stereo_Mix_or_What_U_Hear\"><\/span>Option 1: Stereo Mix or What U Hear<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-330575 \" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/pcs_1.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"506\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Stereo Mix\u00a0is sometimes called \u201cWhat U Hear.\u201d\u00a0It\u2019s a special recording option that your sound drivers might provide. If it is included with your drivers, you can select Stereo Mix (instead of a microphone or audio line-in input), and then force any <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lication to record the same sound that your computer is outputting from its speakers or headphones.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>How to Enable &#8220;Stereo Mix&#8221; in Windows and Record Audio from Your PC<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On modern versions of Windows, Stereo Mix is <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly disabled by default \u2014 even if your sound drivers support it. Follow\u00a0our instructions to enable the Stereo Mix audio source on Windows. After enabling Stereo Mix, you can use any audio-recording program, and just select \u201cStereo Mix\u201d as the input device instead of the usual \u201cline-in\u201d or \u201cmicrophone\u201d option.<\/p>\n<p>On some devices, you may not have this option at all. There may be a way to enable it with\u00a0different audio drivers, but not every piece of sound hardware supports Stereo Mix. No problem. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/web.audacityteam.org\/\">Audacity<\/a>\u00a0has a useful feature that can\u00a0record the audio coming out of your computer\u2014even without Stereo Mix. In fact, Audacity\u2019s feature may be even better than Stereo Mix, assuming you\u2019re willing to use Audacity to record the audio. This method takes advantage of a feature that Microsoft\u00a0added in Windows Vista named the Windows Audio Session API (WASAPI). The feature also functions in Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, and Windows 11, and it helps make up for the lack of a Stereo Mix option on modern Windows PCs.<\/p>\n<p>In Audacity, choose the \u201cWindows WASAPI\u201d audio host.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-835711 \" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/hosts.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"500\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Then choose an appropriate loopback device, such as \u201cSpeakers (loopback)\u201d or \u201cHeadphones (loopback).\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-835712 \" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/audacity-select-audio-devicd.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"500\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>The How-To Geek Guide to Audio Editing: The Basics<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Click the Record button to start recording the audio in Audacity, and then click Stop when you\u2019re done. Because you\u2019re using Audacity,\u00a0you can easily\u00a0trim and edit the sound\u00a0file when you\u2019re done.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_note\"><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> If this doesn\u2019t work, you may also need to select the correct number of recording channels to match your device using the dropdown box to the right of the device selection box. For example, If you have a 7.1 channel headset, select \u201c8.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Audacity\u2019s tutorial\u00a0website <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/manual.audacityteam.org\/man\/tutorial_recording_computer_playback_on_windows.html#wasapi\">explains<\/a> why this feature is actually better than Stereo Mix:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWASAPI loopback has a\u00a0<i><b>big<\/b><\/i>\u00a0advantage over stereo mix or similar inputs provided by the audio interface. The capture is entirely digital (rather than converting to analog for playback, then back to digital when Audacity receives it).\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In other words, your recorded sound file will be higher-quality\u00a0when using Audacity\u2019s WASAPI loopback option.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Option_3_Use_Open_Broadcast_Software\"><\/span>Option 3: Use Open Broadcast Software<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/obsproject.com\/\">Open Broadcast Software (OBS)<\/a>, usually pronounced \u201cOh-bee-ess,\u201d is most popular with streamers on Twitch or <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Youtube<\/a>. It isn\u2019t just good for that, though \u2014 it is a very capable screen or audio recorder, too. OBS records video and audio by default, so you\u2019ll have files in MP4 or MKV formats rather than a pure audio file, but it is simple enough to convert a video file to an audio-only file with VLC.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>How to Record Your Desktop and Create a Screencast on Windows<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is the main OBS window when you first launch the program. Just get <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Cable-Matters-2-Pack-3-5mm-Audio\/dp\/B08HW2C3WM?tag=lsmedia-4402-20\">an audio cable with a male 3.5mm connector on both ends<\/a>. Plug one end into the line-out (or headphone) jack on your PC, and the other end into the line-in (or microphone) jack. You\u2019ll stop hearing the sound your computer produces, but you can use any audio-recording program to record the \u201cline in\u201d or \u201cmicrophone\u201d input. To actually hear the sound, you could get a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/StarTech-com-MUY1MFFS-Female-Stereo-Splitter\/dp\/B0081ZBNI4?tag=lsmedia-4402-20\">splitter<\/a>, and then output the audio to headphones or speakers at the same time you direct it back into your computer.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, this is inconvenient and silly compared to the software-only options we talked about. But, if you desperately need to capture the audio coming out of your computer in an application that isn\u2019t Audacity or OBS, and you don\u2019t have Stereo Mix,\u00a0the cable trick allows you to do this.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>Obviously, copyright laws may prevent you from distributing whatever recordings you make in this way, so don\u2019t use these tricks for piracy!
