\n Tyrod Taylor has been here before.<\/p>\n

The 31-year-old veteran once again finds himself in a quarterback competition on HBO\u2019s \u201cHard Knocks\u201d against a fresh-faced first-round pick.<\/p>\n

In 2018, Taylor was ultimately named the Browns\u2019 Week 1 starter, but suffered an injury two weeks later and was supplanted by No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield for the remainder of the season.<\/p>\n

This time, it\u2019s against a subdued Justin Herbert, who\u2019s going to have to speak up if he hopes to lay claim to any starting role in the NFL.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou gotta let him do his own personality,\u201d Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn said on Tuesday\u2019s episode.<\/p>\n

Herbert was a polarizing prospect ahead of the 2020 NFL Draft and faced criticism for his timid nature. He also spent most of his career at Oregon taking snaps from the shotgun and clapp<\/a>ing before plays in lieu of calling out signals.<\/p>\n

He is now tasked with learning a diverse, NFL-style offense, which includes taking snaps under center and calling out intricate snap counts on a specific cadence in the midst of a coronavirus-shortened preseason.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can tell the difference whether it\u2019s a run or a pass based on the way you talk,\u201d Lynn said to Herbert. \u201cJust keep that in mind, OK?\u201d<\/p>\n

Last season, Taylor threw just six passes behind veteran Philip Rivers, who left for the Colts during free agency. Taylor will be tasked with bringing Herbert up to speed and helping the 22-year-old raw talent gain confidence on the field.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust listen to the rhythmic cadence of (Taylor\u2019s snap count),\u201d offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga said. \u201cThat first \u2018Green 80.\u2019 If he just flies through that \u2018Green 80 Green Hut,\u2019 there\u2019s no timing there for linemen to get good jumps off the f\u2014ing ball. And as a quarterback you want us to get off the f\u2014ing ball.\u201d<\/p>\n

Taylor entered the league as a sixth-round pick in 2011 from Virginia Tech and spent four years in Baltimore as Joe Flacco\u2019s backup. He later proved to be an effective starter during his three-year stint with the Bills and has accrued a total of 9,562 passing yards, 54 passing touchdowns and 20 interceptions, as well as 1,843 rushing yards and 16 rushing touchdowns through 46 career starts.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
