On their new song \u201cFoul\u201d \u2014 the third offering from their third studio LP, <i>Endure<\/i> \u2014 they once again manage to succeed where nearly any other band would fail.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            The New Orleans synth-punk four-piece made it clear with the first two singles from the forthcoming record that they\u2019re unafraid to tweak the formula that\u2019s pushed them to the forefront of their scene and brought them national attention. The urgent admixture of Alli Logout\u2019s radical vocal style with no wave grooves from the bass\/guitar combo of Nathan Cassiani and Maria Elena and club beats from Ruth Mascelli\u2019s drum machine is still at the core of the band\u2019s identity, but they\u2019re now finding inspiration elsewhere too.<\/p>\n<p>            Both <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/0jLiGDl2JzE6AphvAJ4HEl\">Endure<\/a>\u2019s lead single, \u201c(Herman\u2019s) House,\u201d and its follow-up, \u201cMidnight Legend\u201d feat. Mykki Blanco, find Logout exploring a more melodic part of her voice than we\u2019re used to, and the latter track sees the group recompose itself temporarily in the image of a new wave party band.<\/p>\n<p>            In light of those two tracks, \u201cFoul\u201d is a furious return to form, led by a sneering bass lick that underscores the venom behind the lyrics, delivered as a rare duet between Logout and Elena. \u201cIf it\u2019s not my joints,\u201d Logout begins, \u201cIt\u2019s my patience,\u201d Elena answers. \u201cIf it\u2019s not my head,\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s my heart\u201d \/ \u201cCalloused hands,\u201d \u201cTired fingers\u201d \/ \u201cSleep deprived,\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s an art.\u201d And so on.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            The song\u2019s greatest achievement, however, is its chorus, which finds Logout, Elena, and Mascelli, shouting all at once, their lyrics intertwining to create a three-headed monster that\u2019s scarier than the sum of its parts. \u201cI\u2019ll save up any day now!,\u201d Elena shouts repeatedly over the top of the maelstrom as if saying so over and over will make it true. \u201cSure you will,\u201d Mascelli responds, egging her on. \u201cOne more time, 86 hope, one more time.\u201d Meanwhile, between their syllables, Logout pieces together a sardonic proletarian mantra: \u201cTo \u2014 what \u2014 end \u2014 my \u2014 back \u2014 will \u2014 bend \u2014 sacrifi \u2014 cing \u2014 hope \u2014 it \u2014 ne \u2014 ver \u2014 ends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cThis call and response tune is a working class anthem,\u201d Elena said in a statement accompanying the song\u2019s release. \u201cAlli and I co-wrote the lyrics and sing it together with Ruth adding a classic line \u2014 \u2018Foul! Ever so foul!\u2019 It\u2019s a dispatch from the dish pit! An ode to all beleaguered workers!
