\n Brooklyn\u2019s Borough Park neighborhood is experiencing an \u201cuptick\u201d in COVID-19 cases that\u2019s mostly been linked to a large-scale wedding, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve seen an uptick just in the last few days,\u201d de Blasio told reporters during his daily City Hall press briefing, explaining that there were 16 new coronavirus cases in the area.<\/p>\n

Hizzoner called the new cases an \u201cearly warning sign,\u201d as he noted that \u201csome\u201d are \u201clinked to a recent wedding \u2014 a large wedding, in fact, in the community.\u201d<\/p>\n

Currently in New York, only social<\/a> gatherings of up to 50 people are permitted and de Blasio said the wedding in question \u201cwas substantially more than that \u2014 and that\u2019s just not allowed.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was not immediately clear where exactly the wedding was held or whether anyone has been punished.<\/p>\n

De Blasio said the city\u2019s Test and Trace Corps is following up with attendees to get them tested and that the city is \u201cworking immediately to galvanize community leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to avoid those large gatherings that can cause a bigger problem,\u201d said de Blasio, adding that the city\u2019s Health Department will start doubling down on catering halls across the Big App<\/a>le \u201cto let them know those standards must be kept.\u201d<\/p>\n

The mayor also promised that the city will conduct more inspections of catering halls to make sure they\u2019re not flouting capacity rules.<\/p>\n

While the violations are punishable by fines of up to $10,000, no one will face any consequences, de Blasio said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m much more concerned about the going forward,\u201d he told reporters.<\/p>\n

During the height of the coronavirus pandemic, there were several instances of Hasidic Jews breaking social distancing rules by holding large funerals in the Borough Park neighborhood and elsewhere in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, as it was revealed that the Big Apple\u2019s coronavirus infection rate dropped to a record low of 0.24 percent citywide Wednesday, de Blasio debunked any notion that the hard-hit Big Apple has achieved any herd immunity related to the killer bug.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think we have any evidence of herd immunity anywhere in New York City,\u201d de Blasio said. \u201cWe\u2019re nowhere near that point.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Blasio called the idea of herd immunity \u201cfolk wisdom in many communities,\u201d but \u201cwe don\u2019t have proof of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jay Varma, de Blasio\u2019s senior adviser for public health, who was also on Wednesday\u2019s conference call with reporters, referred to a city antibody survey showing that 25 to 30 percent of New Yorkers \u201chave demonstrated some type of infection.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is not a level of antibody coverage that we currently think would mean people are fully protected,\u201d Varma said.<\/p>\n

Varma pointed out that the latest information from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that people who have been infected by the virus are \u201cprotected in some way for up to three months after that initial infection.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe problem is we don\u2019t know how much people are protected after that,\u201d he said, adding, \u201cEverybody should still consider themselves potentially at risk of infection.\u201d<\/p>\n

The only way to continue to keep infection rates low is to wear face coverings, practice social distancing and good hygiene and keep limits on gatherings, the health adviser said.<\/p>\n

However, said Varma, \u201cThere may very well be that there is some percent of the population who are helping keep the infection rate low.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
