“#NYC dad creates summer camp for bored daughter, her friends<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n An enterprising Manhattan dad of two bored teenage girls is playing cabin leader this summer \u2014 at a sleep-away camp he dreamed up for his daughters and 10 of their pals.<\/p>\n

Forbes editor Randall Lane, 52, decided to launch the four-week camp in the Catskills after going through lockdown with his daughters Chloe, 13, and Sabrina, 16.<\/p>\n

He wanted to \u201clet them be kids again,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

To house the camp, he rented out of a massive lakeside ski chalet with \u201cbunk beds and trundle beds galore\u201d at the foot of Hunter Mountain.<\/p>\n

\u201cI bought a bunch of cereal dispensers, and lunch is do-it-yourself,\u201d said the divorced West Village dad, who created a curriculum packed with math lessons, cooking competitions, talents shows, arts and crafts, and movie nights complete with a popcorn machine.<\/p>\n

To attend, the girls had to show up with a negative COVID-19 test and quarantine after getting swabbed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe idea was to split the cost and do it like a co-op, which makes this one of the cheapest sleep-away camps ever,\u201d said Lane. \u201cAnd since we all are quarantined together, it\u2019s the safest.\u201d<\/p>\n

Each girl\u2019s family paid $2,000 for the monthlong adventure.<\/p>\n

All the attendees also signed a \u201ccode of conduct,\u201d which outlined basic rules, such as \u201cbe respectful of the house and the property of others.\u201d Other mandates were a bit more controversial, especially: \u201cHapp<\/a>ily hand over my cellphone and computer.\u201d<\/p>\n

The teens eventually wore Lane down to a six-day-a-week no-phone policy, with Sundays reserved for screen time, before the weekly bonfire and talent show.<\/p>\n

\u201cSunday is the day I go play golf, and they can do their TikTok posts or call their parents or grandparents,\u201d said Lane.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a strict 8:30 a.m. wake-up time and, in addition to all the fun and game<\/a>s, three hours of math work daily.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a girl dad, it was super-important to me that these girls know that they\u2019re great at math,\u201d said Lane, who hired a public school teacher via Craigslist to tutor the group.<\/p>\n

Remote learning, he added, had made it \u201cclear that these kids were falling behind, so this is a way to catch them up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lane also hired the teacher\u2019s boyfriend, who used to run university orientation at Ithaca College, to serve as the camp\u2019s activities director. \u201cAs part of the deal he had to get Red Cross training and bring up a kit,\u201d said Lane.<\/p>\n

It may sound like strict summer school, but the girls are loving it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the structure is really fun,\u201d said Paloma Rao-Audette, 14. \u201cI feel like I\u2019ll be prepped for school, but we also have the freedom to swim and play volleyball \u2014 all the stuff we missed out on when school ended.\u201d<\/p>\n

The older girls have math in the morning, while the younger ones do activities before the groups switch in the afternoon. There\u2019s always a family dinner, while lunch general<\/a>ly consists of smoothies and salads that the girls cobble together.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never seen more avocados decimated. They go through like 10 a day,\u201d said Lane, a former restaurant critic for Time Out New York.<\/p>\n

The girls even competed in a \u201cChopped\u201d-style cooking contest.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe ingredients were peppermint Life Savers, red cabbage, shrimp and strawberries,\u201d said Lane, who judged the dishes along with the camp\u2019s math tutor and activities director. \u201cThe winning dish incorporated all of them. They made a peppermint strawberry glaze over shrimp with a slaw in tacos. I was very impressed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lane is less impressed with the young ladies\u2019 movie picks.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m trying to do classic camp movies<\/a>, like \u2018Meatballs\u2019 or \u2018Wet Hot American Summer,\u2019 \u201d said Lane. \u201cThey want to watch \u2018Titanic.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

But there\u2019s one rule he won\u2019t bend.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo boys allowed was the rule since the beginning,\u201d said Lane. \u201cWe have enough going on here.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
