But as a self-righteous vegetarian, I refuse to dine on murdered animals. Those beliefs, however, are now being challenged by a heretic: cultivated meat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cultivated meat, also known as cultured meat, brings the farm to the lab. Cells are collected from an animal, grown in vitro, and then shaped into familiar forms of edible flesh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Industry advocates proffer myriad benefits \u2014 and needs. According to the UN, around 80 billion animals are slaughtered each year for meat. This livestock produces <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/3\/i3437e\/i3437e.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an estimated 14.5%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of global greenhouse gasses,<\/span> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/3\/a0701e\/A0701E07.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">grazes across 26%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Earth\u2019s terrestrial surface, and <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/3\/a0701e\/A0701E07.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uses 8%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of global freshwater.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper neural channel-cta hs-embed-tnw\">\n<div id=\"hs-embed-tnw\" class=\"channel-cta-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"channel-cta-img\"><img class=\"js-lazy\" https:=\"\"\/><\/div>\n<p><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/src=\" https:=\"\"\/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<div class=\"channel-cta-input\">\n<h2 class=\"channel-cta-title\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Greetings_humanoids\"><\/span>Greetings, humanoids<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"channel-cta-tagline\">Subscribe to our <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>letter now for a weekly recap of our favorite AI stories in your inbox.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Population growth will eventually make these numbers unsustainable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cellular agriculture, argue its supporters, can dramatically allay the damage. The produce can satisfy our need for protein (and desire for meat), reduce our carbon footprint, and prevent animal suffering. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CE Delft, an independent research firm, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gfi.org\/press\/new-studies-further-the-case-for-cultivated-meat-over-conventional-meat-in-the-race-to-net-zero-emissions\/.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">estimates that<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cultivated meat could cause 92% less global warming and 93% less air pollution, while using 95% less land and 78% less water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The nascent sector could also become big business. Consulting firm <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/agriculture\/our-insights\/cultivated-meat-out-of-the-lab-into-the-frying-pan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McKinsey predicts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the market for cultivated meat could reach $25 billion (\u20ac26 billion) by 2030.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"c-richText__pullQuote\">\n<div class=\"c-richText__pullQuoteGradient\">\n<p class=\"c-richText__pullQuoteQuote\">It\u2019s not like meat \u2014 it is meat.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sector has developed rapidly since the world\u2019s first lab-grown\u00a0burger was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thesalt\/2013\/08\/05\/209163204\/long-awaited-lab-grown-burger-is-unveiled-in-london\">unveiled in 2013<\/a>. The patty cost an eye-watering $330,000 to produce. Chefs described it as edible, but not delectable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the scientists behind the project was Daan Luining. The affable Dutchman went on to found Meatable, a cultivated meat startup based in Delft. His big idea emerged from a meeting with Mark Kotter, a neurosurgeon at Cambridge University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kotter was demonstrating a breakthrough <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach to reprogramming human stem cells. Luining suggested applying the technique to a new target: pork and bovine cells.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He quickly convinced Kotter that cultured meat could have enormous value. In 2018, the duo teamed up with Krijn de Nood, a former McKinsey consultant, to co-found Meatable \u2014 and bring their concept to the market.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_meat_lab\"><\/span>The meat lab<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My previous forays into fake meat were plant-based. I\u2019ve sampled a smorgasbord of the produce, from the McDonald\u2019s McPlant burger to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Juicy Marbles\u2019 vegan filet mignon<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They were admirable imitations, but there always were cracks in the illusion \u2014 and the copious sodium couldn\u2019t hide them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cultivated meat takes the mimicry to another level. At Meatable, the process begins by extracting a single cell sample from a cow or pig. The cell is then cultivated in a bioreactor, where it\u2019s fed various nutrients. These elements are mixed and shaped to produce the finished meat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One ingredient Meatable doesn\u2019t use is fetal bovine serum (FBS), a common growth medium in cultivated meat. FBS is harvested from cattle fetuses after their mothers are slaughtered. In addition to tainting the \u201ccruelty-free\u201d marketing of cultured meat, the substance is extremely expensive to use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of FBS, Meatable harnesses pluripotent stem cells, which can multiply indefinitely and convert into almost any cell type. These pluripotent cells replicate the natural growth of muscle and fat \u2014 two essential ingredients to make meat taste like meat.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"post-image post-mediaBleed aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1391621 js-lazy\" alt=\"The farm of the future? The company\u2019s proprietary OPTi-OX system then rapidly converts the pluripotent cells into the desired muscle and fat cells.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luining compares the technique to brewing beer in a vat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re feeding the cells, brewing to create more cells, and then we turn them into muscle or fat,\u201d he says. \u201cThis is basically what meat consists of. It\u2019s the cells of the animal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it is actual meat.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This puts my head in a spin. It\u2019s not vegetarian, but if it\u2019s removed every drawback of conventional meat, why wouldn\u2019t I eat it? And why can\u2019t I find it in Europe?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Going_Dutch\"><\/span>Going Dutch<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meatable\u2019s home country, the Netherlands, is often referred to as the birthplace of cultivated meat. In 1948, a Dutch medical school student researcher, Willem van Eelen, came up with the idea after stumbling across experiments using stem cell tech to grow cells in a tank. He wondered if similar techniques could cultivate meat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Van Eelen went to file several patents that sought to make his vision a reality, but struggled to raise enough money to pursue his plans. He did, however, lay the foundations for another milestone in the Netherlands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2005, Van Eelen helped convince the Dutch government to fund research into cellular agriculture. The program prompted Mark Post, a professor at Maastricht University, to develop the first cultivated hamburger. His achievement attracted mainstream <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> attention,\u00a0and turned many of Van Eelen\u2019s doubters into believers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2013, Post formed his own biotech startup, the Netherlands-based Most Meat. His work has also inspired numerous scientists, including Luining.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meatable, however, plans to launch its products in Singapore \u2014 and with good reason.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"c-richText__pullQuote\">\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Singapore already has cultivated meat on the market. In 2020, the country\u2019s food agency became the first regulatory body to approve the sale of a lab-grown meat product: chicken developed by Eat Just, a Californian startup.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The city state\u2019s embrace of cultured meat is rational. Just 1% of its land is available for agriculture, which forces Singapore to import more than 90% of its food. To shore up against global food supply shocks, the country aims to produce 30% of its food locally by 2030. Cultured meat offers the opportunity to maximize the island\u2019s scarce farming resources.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meatable will enter the market in partnership with Esco Aster, the world\u2019s only licensed cultivated meat manufacturer. The duo this week unveiled plans to bring cultivated pork to Singapore restaurants in 2024, and supermarkets by 2025.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"post-image post-mediaBleed aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1391623 js-lazy\" alt=\"Meatable is working with Singaporean chefs to make dumplings for the Asian market. The bloc\u2019s regulatory requirements are typically clearly defined, but time-consuming to meet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, there are encouraging signs from the union. In 2021, the REACT-EU program gave another Dutch company, Mosa Meat, \u20ac2 million to cut cultured beef costs, while Horizon Europe offered \u20ac32 million for research into sustainable proteins. The European Commission\u00a0also recently funded <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-07-14\/lab-grown-foie-gras-receives-french-government-support-tastes-delicious\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lab-grown foie gras<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Netherlands, meanwhile, is increasing domestic support. In March, the Dutch government passed a motion to legalize public samplings of cultured meats. In April, the Dutch government allocated \u20ac60 million for the development of cellular agriculture. The grant was the largest ever sum of public funding for the sector.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These moves have attracted global recognition. ProVeg International, an NGO dedicated to reducing animal consumption, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/proveg.com\/press-release\/cultured-meat-in-europe-which-country-is-leading-the-race-2\/#:~:text=1.,agriculture%20start%2Dups%20and%20researchers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recently named<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Netherlands the top European nation for government support of cultured meat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The country may have lost its head-start in the sector, but it\u2019s starting to catch up again.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Global_divides\"><\/span>Global divides<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Legislation isn\u2019t the only barrier to mainstream adoption. Cultivated meat remains costly to produce, complicated to scale, and ethically contentious.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists have also questioned the environmental benefits. A 2019 study from Oxford University determined that, in some scenarios, cultivated meats released more greenhouse gasses than conventional farming.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gfi.org\/blog\/cultivated-meat-lca-tea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published last year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> produced more positive conclusions. Analysts at CE Delft found that renewable energy could lead cultivated meat to compete on costs with conventional meat production by 2030 \u2014 and leave a lower carbon footprint. Critics, however, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/526220188\/Cultivated-Meat-review-of-the-cost-of-manufacturing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">called the predictions unrealistic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The field also has powerful rivals. The value of the global meat sector <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/502286\/global-meat-and-seafood-market-value\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was estimated at<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> $897 billion in 2021, and forecast to reach $1.354 billion by 2027. Public opinions can be swayed; bigger bioreactors, cheaper nutrients, and increased cell densities can yield efficiency surges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luining is confident that Meatable will sell a cost-competitive product by 2025.
