\n This art is out of this world.<\/p>\n

A rare collection of stunning, platinum-hued meteorites hit the auction block this week \u2014 offering bidders a chance to take home the cosmically cool space rocks.<\/p>\n

Seven of the jagged metallic pieces \u2014\u00a0 some of which broke off from asteroids and soared to Earth thousands of years ago \u2014 are up for grabs at Christie\u2019s \u201cDeep Impact\u201d online auction until Aug. 25.<\/p>\n

\u201c[It\u2019s] an abstract, otherworldly conversation piece from the asteroid belt,\u201d Christie\u2019s Auctions says in a descript<\/a>ion of one 4-by-6-inch meteorite, which is expected to fetch up to $5,000.<\/p>\n

The most expensive piece is a foot-long \u201cgun metal-hued\u201d iron meteorite found in the Kalahari Desert \u2014\u00a0that\u2019s expected fetch up up to $80,000.<\/p>\n

\u201cOriginating from the asteroid belt and shaped by forces both extraterrestrial and terrestrial, meteorites almost never look like this sculptural form,\u201d Christie\u2019s says of the piece, dubbed the Gibeon Meteorite.<\/p>\n

The meteorites \u2014 some of which originate from the moon or Mars \u2014 are displayed mounted on platforms, like molded sculptures.<\/p>\n

A chance to buy them comes only once in a blue moon, the auction house said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough there are more than 64,000 meteorites in the world\u2019s collections, two-thirds of these will never be available to the general<\/a> public. And the resource is barely growing: each year there are only five or six fresh falls,\u201d the company\u2019s website states.<\/p>\n

Other up-for-grabs space rocks include a ridged one shaped like the continent of South America, which is expected to sell for up to $12,000, and another covered in a rust-colored crust.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
