href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/BL-CJB-10918\">great fanfare<\/a>\u00a0that Warren Buffet\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/09\/29\/business\/worldbusiness\/29iht-byd.1.16552851.html\">paid out<\/a>\u00a0$230 million for a 10 percent stake in Tesla rival BYD.\u00a0\u00a0He had been to the future, and it was China.<\/p>\n<p>Now, 14 years after his initial investment in China\u2019s premier manufacturer of electric vehicles, Buffett is quietly\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gulfnews.com\/business\/how-warren-buffett-turned-230-million-into-8-billion-with-byd-1.1662169902485\">pulling the plug<\/a>\u00a0on this and his\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-09-08\/legendary-china-bets-unwind-as-buffett-softbank-naspers-sell\">other China plays<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0It is worth asking why.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After all, this is the same man who parlayed a small investment into a failing New England textile company called Berkshire Hathaway nearly 70 years ago into a fortune now worth close to 100 billion dollars.\u00a0\u00a0If Buffett is ditching China, it means that, in his view, the risk\/reward ratio has tilted decisively into the red.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s my take on what I think the aptly named Oracle of Omaha is thinking.<\/p>\n<p>In a few days, the 20th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) will open.\u00a0\u00a0Party leader Xi\u00a0Jinping will be supposedly \u201celected\u201d to a third\u00a0five-year\u00a0term, but in reality he will really be locking down his control of China for life.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" This means his decade-long drive to\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/freedomhouse.org\/article\/china-xi-jinpings-third-term-will-mean-dwindling-freedom-14-billion-people\">concentrate all power<\/a>\u00a0in the hands of the state\u2014which is to say<em> his<\/em> hands\u2013will not only continue, but accelerate.\u00a0\u00a0China\u2019s hugely successful private sector will be bled dry, and the\u00a0deadly assault\u00a0on the most productive members of society\u2014people like Alibaba-founder Jack Ma\u2013will continue.<\/p>\n<p>So will Xi\u2019s insane Covid-Zero policy.<\/p>\n<p>After the likely Wuhan lab leak, Xi announced that he was personally overseeing the pandemic response.\u00a0\u00a0And the policy that he settled upon to stop the spread of the coronavirus was to lock down entire cities, even provinces.<\/p>\n<figure criticize this fruitless effort to\u00a0stamp out\u00a0the coronavirus, even as it continues to wreak havoc in the economy.\u00a0\u00a0Indeed, the im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te imposition of a rigid lockdown as soon as a handful of cases of Covid are detected has become almost a kind of loyalty test for Communist officials, a pledge of allegiance to the new Chinese emperor.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Worse yet for China\u2019s economic prospects, a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-10-11\/china-party-paper-praises-covid-zero-again-dashing-easing-hopes\">new series of articles<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0<em>People\u2019s Daily<\/em>\u00a0suggests that the deadly lockdowns, which arguably kill more people than Covid, will continue for several more years.\u00a0\u00a0The official press has been at pains to\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.globaltimes.cn\/page\/202210\/1277038.shtml\">stress the correctness<\/a>\u00a0of the Chinese response, even as every other country on the planet has abandoned it.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" Covid\u2014that China\u2019s economy is in crisis.\u00a0\u00a0Buffet is undoubtedly aware that\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/Publications\/WEO\/Issues\/2022\/10\/11\/world-economic-outlook-october-2022\">official statistics<\/a>\u00a0show the country\u2019s growth has been cut in half\u2014and the actual situation is undoubtedly far more dire.\u00a0\u00a0The property sector is bust, banks are going belly up, and Chinese consumers are tightening their belts.\u00a0\u00a0The Chinese economy is headed for a very hard landing, as political controls tighten and Covid lockdowns continue. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Even without these domestic political headwinds, Buffet is undoubtedly also factoring in recent U.S. actions that will\u00a0further hamstring China\u2019s technological and military advance.\u00a0\u00a0Under the bipartisan\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commerce.gov\/tags\/chips-act\">CHIPS act<\/a>, the U.S. has just imposed new\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/us-aims-hobble-chinas-chip-industry-with-sweeping-new-export-rules-2022-10-07\/\">export controls<\/a>\u00a0on semiconductor chips\u2014not just those made domestically but those made anywhere in the world with U.S. equipment\u2014that will make it much harder for China to\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-10-12\/us-chip-suppliers-pull-back-from-china-s-yangtze-after-biden-ban#xj4y7vzkg\">successfully produce<\/a>\u00a0state-of-the-art electric Armageddon, would be to divide the world into two competing blocks, with the U.S. and Europe on one side, facing a hostile China-Russia axis on the other.\u00a0\u00a0The value of Buffet\u2019s will also deny China the ability to import to chips manufactured in Taiwan.\u00a0\u00a0If Xi wants the island\u2019s chips, he will have to take the state-of-the-art chipmaking facilities by force.\u00a0\u00a0His escalatory rhetoric and increasingly aggressive actions\u2014recently sending drones and missiles over Taiwanese territory\u2014suggests he is contemplating just that.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Even in the absence of open conflict, public sentiment in the West has already turned strongly against China.\u00a0\u00a0It is not just that Beijing likely released a pandemic on the world, killing millions and causing trillions of dollars in economic damage.\u00a0\u00a0The genocide of the Uyghurs, the crushing of a free Hong Kong and its\u00a0support of the Russian invasion\u00a0of Ukraine have all progressively hardened attitudes against China.\u00a0\u00a0Some 82 percent of Americans now have a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/global\/2022\/09\/28\/how-global-public-opinion-of-china-has-shifted-in-the-xi-era\/\">negative view<\/a>\u00a0of the East Asian giant, with anti-China sentiment running even higher in Australia and Japan.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" those in the market for a big-ticket electric vehicle probably don\u2019t want to support a genocidal regime that is openly hostile to America.\u00a0\u00a0Add to this the growing anti-CCP sentiment in the US, and BYD may well find itself shut out of\u00a0the American car market in the future, by consumer boycotts, if not by tariffs. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Warren Buffet has plenty of reasons to\u00a0take his money and run. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And, as always, where Buffet leads,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"
