user to a group, open the Terminal, then type &#8220;sudo usermod -a -G examplegroup exampleusername&#8221; into the window. Replace &#8220;examplegroup&#8221; and &#8220;exampleusername&#8221; with the group and username you want to modify. <\/p>\n<p>Changing the group a user is associated to is a fairly easy task, but not everybody knows the commands, especially to add a user to a secondary group. We\u2019ll walk through all the scenarios for you.<\/p>\n<p>User accounts can be assigned to one or more groups on Linux.\u00a0You can configure file permissions\u00a0and other privileges by group. For example, on Ubuntu, only users in the sudo group can use the <code>sudo<\/code> command to gain elevated permissions.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re using a new Linux laptop, you might have some type of GUI interface to configure these settings (depending on the distribution that you\u2019re running, at least) but realistically it\u2019s almost always easier to just drop down to the terminal and type out a few commands, so that\u2019s what we\u2019re showing you today.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Add_a_New_Group\"><\/span>Add a New Group<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>What&#8217;s the Difference Between Sudo and Su in Linux?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you want to create a new group on your system, use the <code>groupadd <\/code>command following command, replacing new_group\u00a0with the name of the group you want to create. When you use a lowercase g, you assign a primary group. The other groups are the secondary groups.
