Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) blasted the newspaper\u2019s publisher, AG Sulzberger, for not having his back.<\/p>\n<p>James Bennet, who resigned from the Times in 2020 after 19 years at the newspaper, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/article\/10\/18\/2022\/inside-the-identity-crisis-at-the-new-york-times\">told Semafor on Tuesday<\/a> that Sulzberger \u201cset me on fire and threw me in the garbage\u201d in order to \u201cmollify\u201d his readers and gain \u201cthe <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lause and the welcome of the left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bennet accused Sulzberger of kowtowing to the newspaper\u2019s subscribers whose \u201cexpectation \u2026 is that the Times will be Mother Jones on steroids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said his colleagues treated him \u201clike an incompetent fascist\u201d in the wake of Cotton\u2019s op-ed.<\/p>\n<p>The Post has sought comment from the Times.<\/p>\n<p>In the aftermath of the fatal arrest of George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, in Minneapolis more than two years ago, Cotton was invited to write a guest op-ed in which he called for a forceful military response to the resulting nationwide unrest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne thing above all else will restore order to our streets: an overwhelming show of force to disperse, detain and ultimately deter lawbreakers,\u201d Cotton wrote in the guest op-ed, which was titled <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/03\/opinion\/tom-cotton-protests-military.html\">\u201cSend In the Troops.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"755\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/james-bennet-1.jpg?w=755\" alt=\"James Bennet resigned in June 2020 -- days after he greenlighted a controversial op-ed piece by Sen. The elder Sulzberger remained chairman of the New York Times Company until the end of 2020.<\/p>\n<p>AG Sulzberger is the great-great-grandson of former Times owner Adolph Ochs.<\/p>\n<p>Bennet told Semafor that Sulzberger and the Times \u201cwant to have it both ways\u201d \u2014 being an \u201cold school\u201d publication that allows for airing of diverse viewpoints while at the same time catering to its hardcore liberal readership.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/george-floyd-1.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Times newsroom staffers and the publication's readers were critical of the Cotton op-ed.\" class=\"wp-image-24300264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/george-floyd-1.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/george-floyd-1.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/george-floyd-1.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Times newsroom staffers and the publication\u2019s readers were critical of the Cotton op-ed.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He told Semafor that he thought the Times editors were beholden to the predominantly liberal subscribers who began signing up for subscriptions in droves during the Trump presidency.<\/p>\n<p>Bennet said that \u201cthey want to have the applause and the welcome of the left, and now there\u2019s the problem on top of that that they\u2019ve signed up so many new subscribers in the last few years and the expectation of those subscribers is that the Times will be Mother Jones on steroids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bennet expressed disappointment that Sulzberger failed to offer support even though his career at the Times included stints covering violent events such as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI actually knew what it meant to have a target on your back when you\u2019re reporting for the New York Times,\u201d Bennet told Semafor. \u201cNone of that mattered, and none of it mattered to AG.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cWhen push came to shove at the end, he set me on fire and threw me in the garbage and used my reverence for the institution against me.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is why I was so bewildered for so long after I had what felt like all my colleagues treating me like an incompetent fascist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
