They will also offer account holders the option of establishing \u201csubaccounts,\u201d paying more to allow others to use their Netflix service.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       <strong>Earnings <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>: Netflix snaps streak of subscriber declines, stock jumps 15%<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve landed on a thoughtful approach to monetize account sharing and we\u2019ll begin rolling this out more broadly starting in early 2023,\u201d the letter reads. \u201cAfter listening to consumer feedback, we are going to offer the ability for borrowers to transfer their Netflix profile into their own account, and for sharers to manage their devices more easily and to create subaccounts (\u201cextra member\u201d), if they want to pay for family or friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The approach sounds similar to tests Netflix has been running in Latin America after executives announced earlier this year that they would seek to put a stop to password sharing. That test gave viewers the ability to watch Netflix in one designated home, but subscribers were forced to pay an additional $2.99 for each new home in which someone would be streaming through a given Netflix account. <\/p>\n<p>Netflix executives have long acknowledged the reality that consumers share their passwords, allowing others to access the streaming service without paying, but said they were not worried about the practice. That changed earlier this year, after the company reported its first year-over-year decline in subscribers \u2014 executives said at that time that they expect roughly 100 million households were accessing the service without paying, while the service at the time had roughly 222 million paying subscribers.<\/p>\n<p>Third-party studies have also shown the practice is widespread. According to an Aura survey from 2021,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/aura-survey-many-americans-are-prioritizing-streaming-access-over-security-301426089.html\" class=\"icon none\">53% of Americans admit they share login information<\/a>\u00a0with people outside their main household.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Previously: Here\u2019s what you need to know if you share a Netflix account<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The crackdown on password sharing is part of a revamp Netflix executives publicly began after reporting disappointing results in April, amid a wave of streaming competition from the likes of Walt Disney Co.<br \/>\n        DIS,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203410047\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.18%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Apple Inc.<br \/>\n        AAPL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202934861\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.94%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and more. That also includes the introduction of a cheaper, ad-supported tier that is expected to arrive in some countries during the fourth quarter, and which executives suggested in Tuesday\u2019s letter could help retain users who had been accessing the service through someone else\u2019s account.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn countries with our lower-priced ad-supported plan, we expect the profile-transfer option for borrowers to be especially popular,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>There are concerns that Netflix could face a backlash from consumers after years of allowing the practice of password sharing to grow, however.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNetflix\u2019s decision to crack down on password-sharing has the potential to tap into a significant revenue opportunity,\u201d Third Point analyst Jamie Lumley said in an emailed statement Tuesday. \u201cHowever, our experts are skeptical about its chances of success both from a technical standpoint and in terms of the pushback from users, which has already been seen in [Latin American] markets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Separately, Netflix announced Monday that the option to transfer a profile into a separate subscription was rolling out globally. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/about.netflix.com\/en\/news\/profile-transfer-keeps-netflix-experience-constant\" class=\"icon none\">A blog post<\/a> from product manager Timi Kosztin said that subscribers would receive an email when they were eligible for Profile Transfer, \u201ca feature that lets people using your account transfer a profile \u2014 keeping the personalized recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>s, and other settings \u2014 when they start their own membership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>For more: Ads are coming to Netflix in November with plan costing $6.99 a month<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Netflix has not publicly specified how it may enforce any password-sharing restrictions, but one test being carried out in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru verifies the main account holder through an IP address (aka the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of numbers that identifies any device on a network), and not geographical location, a Netflix spokesperson previously told MarketWatch. That\u2019s in part because enforcement based on the geographical location of the main account would run into problems if a user attempted to use their own Netflix account while away from home on a mobile device, like a phone or laptop.<\/p>\n<p>A Netflix representative told MarketWatch on Tuesday that they would not have anything more to share on the password-sharing crackdown beyond the letter. Executives were scheduled to conduct an interview related to earnings beginning at 6 p.m. Eastern time Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p>Netflix shares have cratered amid the company\u2019s growth issues in 2022, falling 60% so far this year as the S&amp;P 500 index<br \/>\n        SPX,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210599714\/realtime\" class=\"positive\">+1.14%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       has declined 22.8%.
