He prefaced it by explaining his reason for penning the new book:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI wanted to share when I was safe from going into the dark side of everything again. I had to wait until I was pretty safely sober \u2014 and away from the active disease of alcoholism and addiction \u2014 to write it all down.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Related: Courteney Cox Reacts To Kanye West\u2019s Claim That\u00a0<em>Friends\u00a0<\/em>\u2018Wasn\u2019t Funny\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 53-year-old then shared his truth \u2014 one that he initially disguised to the public four years ago as a \u201cgastrointestinal perforation,\u201d but is now ready to come clean about: he nearly died as the result of his colon bursting from an <strong>OxyContin<\/strong> overdose. He explained that at the time, he was rushed to the hospital and when he was admitted, \u201cthe doctors told my family that I had a two percent chance to live,\u201d adding:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was put on a thing called an <strong>ECMO<\/strong> machine, which does all the breathing for your heart and your lungs. And that\u2019s called a Hail Mary. No one survives that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now THAT is some scary stuff! We couldn\u2019t imagine being his family, hearing that all odds were against him. However, he fought and fought, and after TWO whole weeks in a coma, he came back into consciousness, but was still far from recovered. Matthew recalled spending five months in the hospital and another nine months using a colostomy bag. He shared:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere were five people put on an ECMO machine that night and the other four died and I survived. So the big question is why? Why was I the one? There has to be some kind of reason.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, he\u2019s channeled all that into his memoir, noting the \u201cmain\u201d reason for writing it being \u201cI was pretty certain that it would help people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we\u2019ve heard in the post, the star\u2019s addiction all began around the time he was cast in <em>Friends<\/em> at age 24, and from there, he just \u201ccouldn\u2019t stop because the disease and the addiction is progressive. So it gets worse and worse as you grow older.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, after 15 rounds of rehab and a near-death experience, he noted, \u201cI\u2019m pretty healthy now.\u201d Playfully, he confessed:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve got to not go to the gym much more, because I don\u2019t want to only be able to play superheroes. But no, I\u2019m a pretty healthy guy right now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Related: David Schwimmer Hilariously Reacts To Jennifer Aniston\u2019s Steamy Shower Pic!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matthew didn\u2019t give specifics as to how long he\u2019s currently been sober, but explained he counts each day, noting:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s important, but if you lose your sobriety, it doesn\u2019t mean you lose all that time and education. Your sober date changes, but that\u2019s all that changes. You know everything you knew before, as long as you were able to fight your way back without dying, you learn a lot.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also admitted the scars left behind on his stomach from 14 life-saving surgeries serve as \u201creminders to stay sober,\u201d noting, \u201call I have to do is look down.\u201d He continued:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy therapist said, \u2018the next time you think about taking Oxycontin, just think about having a colostomy bag for the rest of your life,\u2019 and a little window opened and I crawled through it and I no longer want Oxycontin anymore.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"sbi-embed-wrap\">\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media sbi-embed\" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Cj5Jy8UOzKL\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\" style=\" background:#FFF;
