In healthy adults and older children, RSV typically causes mild, cold-like symptoms that go away with moderate rest and self-care.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Younger children, especially those\u00a0less\u00a0than 6 months\u00a0old, have the highest risk of developing severe cases that could lead to hospitalization.<\/p>\n<p>There are currently no vaccines available for RSV, and the only treatment is\u00a0monoclonal antibodies, usually reserved for extremely high-risk cases,\u00a0including infants born prematurely or those with chronic diseases related to the heart and lungs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that more than 4,000 cases of RSV are being reported each week recently, similar to the last major surge, which was experienced in the summer of 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe always expect it around November,\u00a0to start <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earing late November and peak through December, January and then decreasing by March, April,\u201d Diego\u00a0Hijano,\u00a0an infectious disease specialist at St. Jude Children\u2019s Research Hospital, told The Hill.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat has not been the case over the last few years, where we had one outbreak over the summer and then not a lot of activity\u00a0early\u00a0on,\u201d\u00a0Hijano said. \u201cWe have already seen above what we expect for October\u00a0any given year in terms of\u00a0RSV\u00a0locally\u00a0and around the country. So certainly, it\u2019s a concern as we kind of head into the winter with COVID, flu\u00a0and\u00a0RSV.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The CDC is projecting that cases have already begun to decline, though the information is incomplete and subject to change.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Like the influenza virus, exposure to RSV has been lower over the past few years as people\u00a0worked from home and kept their children out of daycares during the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>At St. Jude in Memphis, where he is based,\u00a0Hijano\u00a0said he is seeing an equal amount of COVID-19, flu and RSV cases.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s concerning, you know, because it will definitely overwhelm the emergency department and the health care system as these trends continue,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>As <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2022\/10\/20\/pediatrics-hospital-capacity-dc-children\/\">the\u00a0Washington Post reported\u00a0this week<\/a>,\u00a0several\u00a0children\u2019s\u00a0hospitals\u00a0in the D.C.\u00a0area\u00a0have\u00a0already\u00a0reached capacity as they respond to spikes in RSV and the common cold.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Juan Salazar, the vice president of Connecticut Children\u2019s Medical Center, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/cold-flu\/childrens-hospital-faces-worst-rsv-surge-25-years-coming-high-numbers-rcna53139\">told\u00a0NBC\u2019s \u201cToday\u201d\u00a0on Thursday<\/a> that in his career of more than 30 years, he\u00a0had never seen this level of viral transmission or\u00a0need for hospitalization when it came to RSV. Salazar said\u00a0that his hospital was considering temporary units out on its lawn, as well as the use of\u00a0resources from the\u00a0state and National Guard.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kristin Moffitt, an infectious disease specialist at Boston Children\u2019s Hospital, said she felt her hospital was\u00a0prepared\u00a0for a potential surge in cases. Speaking to The Hill, Moffitt noted that\u00a0the sharp increase in virus cases has not yet been observed where she\u00a0works but\u00a0opined that the Northeast should expect an uptick soon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI can only speak for my hospital. We are very, very adaptable,\u201d Moffitt said. \u201cAnd frankly, children\u2019s hospitals and pediatric emergency rooms have been adapting for two-and-a-half years now to what has been a real \u2014 especially in the last year-and-a-half \u2014 a real unbelievable surge in utilization of pediatric emergency rooms.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not terribly worried that we won\u2019t be able to rise to a demand if need be and if there\u2019s a real surge in pediatric hospitalizations,\u201d Moffitt added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She said the\u00a0recent\u00a0shift in the annual\u00a0reoccurrence\u00a0of RSV cases has presented\u00a0a potential\u00a0challenge\u00a0in treating severe cases. Monoclonal antibodies do not last very long and must be ordered monthly. RSV\u2019s\u00a0previous\u00a0predictability had allowed hospitals to order enough treatments\u00a0in advance, but Moffitt said the earlier surge\u00a0increases\u00a0the chances that a hospital will not have enough on hand.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With no vaccines available for the virus and only one viable treatment, the infectious disease specialists who spoke with The Hill said the best way\u00a0for parents to approach this season of respiratory viral spread is to limit and prevent potential exposure in <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hijano\u00a0noted that mask-wearing, particularly in daycares and preschools, is all but forgotten now.\u00a0Acknowledging\u00a0that this option can be difficult for parents to consider, he advised that children\u00a0be kept\u00a0at home if they are sick to prevent the potential spread of any viruses\u00a0in the community.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it comes to day-to-day basis, basically stay home if you\u2019re sick, wash your hands and avoid coughing into each other,\u201d\u00a0Hijano\u00a0said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Moffitt said that parents should make sure to be aware\u00a0that the people who are in close contact with their young infants are feeling healthy themselves. She added that parents could also take the\u00a0additional\u00a0step of asking people outside their households\u00a0not to\u00a0kiss their babies, as\u00a0respiratory\u00a0secretions from the mouth are a common pathway for transmission.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She added that parents with a young infant as well as a toddler should also ensure that their toddler is clean and isn\u2019t displaying symptoms before interacting with their younger siblings, as toddlers are often exposed at daycare\u00a0or playgroups.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think parents can make decisions about what their risk tolerance is,\u201d Moffitt said. \u201cSteps like that can help to probably not eliminate but at least decrease the possibility of exposure for the infants.\u201d\n<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
