Audio quality is one area where they can differ greatly. So which one sounds the best? The main one is \u201ckbps\u201d (kilobits per second), plus there\u2019s \u201cbit\u201d and \u201ckHz\u201d (kilohertz). Here\u2019s what you need to know.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Kbps<\/strong>: The \u201cbitrate\u201d of the audio file. It\u2019s a similar concept to video resolution\u2014the higher the number, the better it sounds. Kbps is mostly used as the metric for regular, compressed audio files.<\/li>\n<li><strong>24bit<\/strong>: The bit depth of lossless file types (AAC, ALAC, FLAC, MQA, etc) and uncompressed file types (WAV). This measures the dynamic range of the file. The higher the number, the more depth there is. You can listen to it quieter without losing detail.<\/li>\n<li><strong>kHz<\/strong>: This measures the\u00a0sampling rate for lossy, lossless, and uncompressed filetypes. Essentially, it tells you how many samples of audio are taken per second. It\u2019s still one of the best services if you care about audio quality.<\/p>\n<p>There are three Tidal tiers, two of which offer high-quality audio. The \u201cTidal HiFi\u201d plan is the best for most people. It serves up audio up to CD-quality, which is equivalent to\u00a01411kbps. A step above is the \u201cTidal HiFi Plus\u201d plan, which adds \u201cTidal Masters\u201d lossless audio that goes up to 24bit \/ 192kHz, 9216 kbps. Tidal supports\u00a0AAC, ALAC, FLAC, MQA.<\/p>\n<p>That extra high quality comes at a price\u2014Tidal HiFi Plus is $19.99 per month.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Amazon_Music_Unlimited_3730_kbps\"><\/span>Amazon Music Unlimited:\u00a03730 kbps<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-699783\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/amazon-music.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"amazon music logo\" width=\"650\" height=\"300\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 15px; font-weight: 400;\">A more affordable option for high-quality audio is Amazon Music Unlimited. It\u2019s $10 per month or $9 if you\u2019re a Prime subscriber. Prime Unlimited uses FLAC for high-res audio, which comes out up to\u00a024bit\/192kHz. For the best possible quality, look for tracks labeled \u201cUltra HD.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 15px; font-weight: 400;\">The majority of the high-res tracks are labeled \u201cHigh Definition,\u201d which go up to\u00a01411kbps. One advantage of Music Unlimited over some of the others is the desktop app is also capable of playing high-quality audio up to\u00a03730 kbps. You\u2019re not just limited to your phone.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Apple_Music_Lossless_1411_kbps\"><\/span>Apple Music (Lossless): 1411 kbps<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-840152\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/apple-music.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Apple Music\" width=\"650\" height=\"353\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Apple Music is a sleeper pick if you\u2019re looking for high-quality audio that doesn\u2019t cost so much.\u00a0Lossless audio can be enabled on the standard $10 per month plan. Apple uses its own proprietary codec (ALAC) and AAC for CD-quality streams.<\/p>\n<p>There are some caveats if you want the best possible audio quality from Apple Music. First, the desktop app is capped at only 256 kbps. Second, lossless audio only works over wired headphones. Spotify Premium\u2018s highest audio quality settings only goes up to 320 kbps. However, in early 2021, the company <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=204a528a336ede4177fff0d84a044482&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fnewsroom.spotify.com%2F2021-02-22%2Ffive-things-to-know-about-spotify-hifi%2F&amp;cuid=xid:{xid}&amp;___trxnet=vg\">announced \u201cSpotify HiFi.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As of October 2022, Spotify HiFi has still not launched. When it does, Spotify claims it will \u201cdeliver music in CD-quality, lossless audio format to your device and Spotify Connect-enabled speakers.\u201d That typically means\u00a01411 kbps and\u00a024bit\/192kHz.<\/p>\n<p>Spotify did not share whether this will be included for Premium subscribers or if it will require a new plan.
