He shared with the longtime journalist how he experienced a \u201cscary moment\u201d when <em>The Morning Show<\/em> star once confronted him about his addiction, even telling him at one point:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c\u2018We know you\u2019re drinking.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Matthew added:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cYeah, imagine how scary a moment that was. She was the one that reached out the most. You know, I\u2019m really grateful to her for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Related: <em>Welcome To Plathville<\/em> Star Kim Plath Arrested &amp; Charged With DUI<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the midst of his addiction, the<em> 17 Again<\/em> star shared he was taking \u201c55 Vicodin a day\u201d in addition to \u201cMethadone, Xanax,\u201d and \u201ca full quart of vodka a day.\u201d He said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAt the time, I should have been the toast of the town. I was in a dark room meeting nothing but drug dealers and completely alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>His drug abuse became so bad he almost died at 49 years old. Speaking with <em>People<\/em> earlier this week, Matthew revealed while he first claimed he suffered from a \u201cgastrointestinal perforation\u201d four years ago, he actually spent five months in the hospital (and two weeks in a coma) after his colon burst from an <strong>OxyContin<\/strong> overdose. He admitted that \u201cthe doctors told my family that I had a two percent chance to live,\u201d adding:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI was put on a thing called an ECMO machine, which does all the breathing for your heart and your lungs. And that\u2019s called a Hail Mary. No one survives that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Scary! After being forced to wear a colostomy bag for nearly a year, Matthew decided to get sober and seek out therapy:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt was pretty hellish having one because they break all the time. My therapist said, \u2018The next time you think about taking OxyContin, just think about having a colostomy bag for the rest of your life.\u2019 And a little window opened, and I crawled through it, and I no longer want OxyContin.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>We\u2019re glad to hear that Matthew had someone to lean on during his battle with addiction.
