Gov. John Fetterman (D) is facing a potential make-or-break moment Tuesday as he squares off with his Republican opponent Mehmet Oz in the first and likely only televised debate of the state\u2019s marquee Senate race.<\/p>\n<p>Fetterman has faced repeated questions about his health since suffering a stroke in May. But the scrutiny was amplified considerably earlier this month after an NBC <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> interview showed him using his closed captioning system to communicate.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Adding to the pressure are recent polls showing a tightening race, as Oz has hammered Fetterman on not only his health but also his track record on handling crime as the state\u2019s lieutenant governor \u2014 and two snapshots of the race show as much.<\/p>\n<p>An\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/10\/18\/oz-fetterman-pennsylvania-senate-00062330\">AARP Pennsylvania pol<\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/10\/18\/oz-fetterman-pennsylvania-senate-00062330\">l\u00a0released on Tuesday<\/a> showed Fetterman leading Oz 48 percent to 46 percent, putting him within the margin of error, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fox29.com\/election\/insideradvantage-fox-29-poll-fetterman-oz-neck-and-neck-as-shapiros-lead-narrows\">while a\u00a0Fox<\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fox29.com\/election\/insideradvantage-fox-29-poll-fetterman-oz-neck-and-neck-as-shapiros-lead-narrows\">29-InsiderAdvantage poll<\/a>\u00a0showed the two tied at 46 percent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the sincere hope that John can really hold himself up to the scrutiny that comes with a high-profile debate, and I think he can,\u201d said T.J. Rooney, a former Pennsylvania Democratic Party chairman. \u201cThrough video and things he\u2019s done going back to July, he\u2019s in such a much better place today than he was then that I hope that strength is able to be better depicted during the course of the debate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou worry anytime anybody goes into a debate. It\u2019s not a fear, but it\u2019s more of a hope knowing what John has gone through,\u201d Rooney continued. \u201cThe stakes are high.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fetterman\u2019s recovery could be a significant factor in the debate, with critics raising questions about whether he is healthy enough to adequately perform the duties of a U.S. senator.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, his campaign released a note from his doctor saying he was in good health and does not have work restrictions. However, Fetterman\u2019s symptoms of an auditory processing disorder could impact how he comes across to viewers in a high-pressure televised setting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Democrats concede that Oz, who hosted his own television show for over a decade, has the upper hand going into the forum.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously this is Oz\u2019s turf,\u201d said one Democratic strategist. \u201cWe\u2019re talking about a debate between a 20-year TV celebrity and a guy who is still recovering from a stroke.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s just the reality of this,\u201d the strategist added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>On top of that, Fetterman faced criticism for his debate performances during the Democratic Senate primary earlier this year, which took place prior to his stroke.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reality is it\u2019s not his biggest strength,\u201d a second Democratic operative told The Hill. \u201cOne thing that I think is very true if you watch those debates is he starts slow and then improves.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fetterman\u2019s allies instead are pointing to his reception from voters on the ground in Pennsylvania, arguing that a televised debate will not be the race\u2019s singular pivotal moment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cActually doing the work is far more important than parachuting in from New Jersey and being really slick on camera,\u201d the first Democratic strategist said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fetterman\u2019s campaign has touted his own <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earances on the trail, particularly at rallies he\u2019s held in recent weeks. On Tuesday, the campaign said 443 people turned out at a rally he held in conservative Butler County. Last Saturday, the campaign said it turned out 637 people at a rally in Delaware County.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTactically, I think a televised debate favors Dr. Oz, but overall I\u2019d much rather be John Fetterman than Mehmet Oz in this race,\u201d the first Democratic strategist said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For Republicans, the main fear heading into Tuesday night centers on the expectations <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>, as questions have proliferated for months over whether Fetterman can literally speak coherently on stage. If he does clear that low bar, the night may be considered a success for Democrats and their chances to pull out this race.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, the expectations are near nothing for Fetterman. If he gets up there and can string sentences, it doesn\u2019t matter how crazy they are, that\u2019ll probably be enough. But I\u2019m not sure he\u2019s going to do it.\u201d one Pennsylvania-based GOP strategist told The Hill, insisting that Fetterman must show more than that. \u201cFetterman has to land some effective punches because I think Oz is winning right now, and this is the only debate. He has to change the trajectory somehow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Expectations-wise, the situation is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/09\/27\/us\/politics\/trump-biden-debate-expectations.html\">reminiscent of the\u00a0first pr<\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/09\/27\/us\/politics\/trump-biden-debate-expectations.html\">esidential debate in 2020<\/a>\u00a0when allies of former President Trump for weeks questioned President Biden\u2019s mental acuity and sharpness, dubbing him \u201cSleepy Joe.\u201d The one-two step of a solid Biden debate performance coupled with Trump\u2019s heckling handed Biden a debate win.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, there are differences. Biden was a longtime national politician then who had debated for years, including against Republicans in <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> elections \u2014 headlined by his vice presidential debates against then-Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) and former Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For Republicans, the nightmare debate scenario still looms in the back of their minds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one red flag that I don\u2019t want to see is when Fetterman f\u2014- up, Oz should not pile on. \u2026 The moment that would suck is when a guy is clearly struggling and Oz says \u2018See! This guy can\u2019t be our senator,\u2019\u201d the Pennsylvania-based GOP strategist added. \u201cThat could come across as a little callous.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a temptation to do it. There\u2019s a want to put a period on the sentence.
